Users in some locales and on some versions of Windows might need to go through extra steps to install more voices for their locale. The Firefox team is testing this in languages other than English to determine which languages and which versions will need additional instructions.

They will let us know what the most user-friendly workaround is. Before we update this article, let's wait to hear back from them about instructions.

In the meantime, if you're seeing questions in the forum, please see this link: http://superuser.com/questions/590779/how-to-install-more-voices-to-windows-speech

Thanks for your patience as we try to figure this out. Here are some caveats to this feature:

    1. Articles in other locales except Chinese are read like English articles. For example, an Italian article would be read like English and if it has numbers in it, those would also be read in English. Chinese articles are read in Chinese.
    2. If a user has the proper language pack installed, articles would be read in English, but with that locale's accent.
    3. Windows 10 would have the right language pack installed if it's bought in that country. But, for example, If an Italian user buys a computer in a country other than Italy, he or she would need to install the Italian language pack. I've created a common response for this. We don't normally write instructions for other organizations, but it might be easier for our community to help users of this feature if we have our instructions internally.
    4. Windows 7 users would need to download a third party language pack to get the right voice for their locale.
    5. Supported voices:

    ca-ES (Herena) da-DK (Helle) de-DE (Hedda) en-AU (Hayley) en-CA (Heather) en-GB (Hazel) en-IN (Heera) en-US (Helen) es-ES (Helena) es-MX (Hilda) fi-FI (Heidi) fr-CA (Harmonie) fr-FR (Hortense) it-IT (Lucia) ja-JP (Haruka) ko-KR (Heami) nb-NO (Hulda) nl-NL (Hanna) pl-PL (Paulina) pt-BR (Heloisa) pt-PT (Helia) ru-RU (Elena) sv-SE (Hedvig) zh-CN (HuiHui) zh-HK (HunYee) zh-TW (HanHan)

Hi Joni, now I have a few hints for Italian, maybe they might help for other languages:

    • Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 bought in Italy have native languages installed
    • In Windows 7 there is no official Microsoft documentation to install voices and make them work. I've found a few hacks but they fall far, far beyond the scope of SUMO.
    • Mac OS X (recent versions) should have an Italian voice.
    • My Linux installation has no voices. Maybe that's because I haven't installed any package related to Accessibility, but I am not sure about this.
