Lessons I learned from writing a Hot Issue KB article for an issue found in Firefox 18 for Android

Hi all especially Scoobidiver, underpass and Alice who gave feedback

Rules of thumb that we discussed at the KB meeting ( https://etherpad.mozilla.org/kb-2013-02-07 )

    * Q1 Do we set it ready for localization? A: It's a judgement call. If it's a limited number of users and a fix is coming quickly, then no.

    * Q2 Do we mention dates of the issue starting and the release of a fix in the KB article? A:No use your judgement, does it help solve the problem? because it can be confusing and is always a guess

    * Q3 What happens when we have a new release for a issue documented in a KB article? A: update the article to point to the release where the issue is fixed. Delete the rest of the content of the article. Monitor traffic to the article for about a week and see if the issue is truly fixed and if so, archive the topic after a week.

    Lessons I learned:

    1. I shouldn't have set the article to "Ready for localization" since it wasn't necessary to localize given the urgency of the issue and the planned quick fix in 18.0.2
    2. I should have posted an update in the Firefox 18 contributor thread.

    Timeline:

We learned about the problem morning Pacific, discussed it at the regular public Thursday Firefox Android Engineering meeting at 9:30a.m., the regular Thursday public Firefox Channel meeting at 11a.m.and got the request to create a SUMO article around 1p.m. so there was not much online discussion other than these 2 meetings, bugzilla (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=838603 ) and the release-drivers email list.

    Hi, Roland.

I'm impressed how fast you got this "hot topic" article written and updated. Only thing, next time add a bug# or other reference! Other KB editors need background information so that they can follow your work .... I had to do a google search!

    Regards, Alice

How does the ShareArticle template work and how is a mz.la link added, is that something only reviewers/admins may do ?

I found /forums/contributors/705275#post-12211 saying Unfortunately the mzl.la account is not a shared one, & thread list of articles that need a mzl.la link /forums/contributors/708451

I note Roland tried to add a link and then commented it out before it was removed. I used an add-on and at least put a short link in.

I can understand that a list of such links would not be editable, but why are they not publically listed in read only form ?

I remember I came across a short one for a bugzilla search recently.

The article does not have a mz.la link so I edited to add a shortlink, it would be better with a proper mz.la link

    Hi Swarnava,

It is the article this discussion belongs to, and has just been reviewed and approved by Michael /firefox-android-crashes-startup-how-.../36721.

That reminds me I guess it is about time I asked to enroll in the KB editors group, I will pm Michael.

Roland himself seemed to have a problem with this and added a template initially then gave up on it.

Just to close this thread off, I am going to figure out how do the short links in the event Swarnava can't do it.
