How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer

Third-party PDF viewers are available, if you prefer not to use the Firefox built-in viewer. To switch from the built-in PDF viewer to another viewer:

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  2. Select the Applications panel.In the General panel, go down to the Applications section.
  3. Find the Portable Document Format (PDF) entry in the list and click on it to select it.
  4. Click on the arrow under the Action column for the above entry and select the PDF viewer you wish to use from the drop-down menu.

    • When Preview in Firefox is the selected action, the built-in PDF viewer is used. For more information, see View PDF files in Firefox or choose another viewer.
      Note: If you want to view PDF files in Firefox using a plugin instead of in an external PDF reader application, select Use PDF plugin name (in Firefox)
  5. Close the Settings page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.
