Firefox OS lets you share your data connection with other devices by creating a Wi-Fi hotspot or by tethering with a USB cable. This article will show you how to set that up.

Share your connection over Wi-Fi

Set up your Wi-Fi hotspot

This step only needs to be done once.

  1. Open the Settings app, scroll down and tap Internet sharing.
  2. Tap the Hotspot Settings button.
    • Here you can change the name of your hotspot (SSID network name) and change the type of security used.
      • Open: Anyone can access your network without a password.
Warning: Leaving your network unsecured in a public place could allow anyone to have unlimited access to your data connection.
      • WPA Secured: When using this setting you will have to set a password that others will need to connect. Also, data being transferred will be encrypted.
      • WPA2 Secured: This is the most secure option but it isn't supported by some older devices. You will have to set a password that others will need to connect and data being transferred will be encrypted.
  3. Press OK to save your hotspot settings.

Turn your Wi-Fi hotspot on

  1. Open the Settings app, scroll down and tap Internet sharing.
  2. Toggle the Wi-Fi hotspot on.

Other devices will now be able to find your hotspot by its name (default name is "FirefoxHotspot").

Share your connection over USB

You can also share your data connection by connecting your device to a computer with a USB cable. This is called "tethering."

  1. Connect your Firefox OS device to a computer with a USB cable.
  2. Open the Firefox OS Settings app, scroll down and tap Internet sharing.
  3. Toggle USB tethering on.

If you computer is not already connected to the internet it may automatically connect once USB tethering is on. If it doesn't, you may have to select "USB" or "Local Area Network" in your computer's network settings.

Having trouble?

Make sure your Firefox OS device is in range of a cellular network and that your data connection is turned on.

  1. To turn on your data connection, open the Settings app, scroll down and tap Cellular & Data.
  2. Then toggle Data connection on.
