After you bookmark a page, you have the option of adding "tags" to the bookmark. A tag is a label that helps you identify a bookmark you've made. These tags are used to help better categorize bookmarks so you can find them in both your menu and when searching.
Table of Contents
Tagging a new bookmark
After you bookmark a page, clicking the star for a second time will open the Edit This Bookmark panel. For methods on how to add a new bookmark, see How do I bookmark a page?.
When you first bookmark a page, the Page Bookmarked panel will open.
For methods on how to add a new bookmark, see How do I bookmark a page?.
The Tags field lets you enter a list of tags you want associated with the new bookmark. When using more than one tag, use a comma to separate them.
For example, let's say you've bookmarked the page http://www.amazon.com. You might want to tag that bookmark with shopping, books, and gifts.
Clicking the star for a second time will open the Edit This Bookmark panel.
You can also add tags you have previously used by clicking on the down arrow next to the Tags field. Put a check mark next to each tag you want to add to the bookmark.
Editing tags for bookmarks
If you want to add or change tags for an existing bookmark, you can do so in one of two ways.
Using the bookmark star
To change tags using the bookmark star:
- Open the bookmarked page you want to edit.
- Click on the filled in star in the Location bar. The Edit Bookmark box will appear.
- Add or remove tags by editing the Tags field or using the down arrow to add or remove check marks for existing tags.
Using the Library window
To change tags using the Library window:
- Click the menu button to open the menu panel. Click and then click the bar at the bottom.
- In the Library window, open the folder where you saved the bookmark (e.g. Bookmarks Menu or some sub-folder you've created).
- Select the bookmark you want to edit. The bottom portion of the Library window will display information about the bookmark.
- Add or remove tags by editing the Tags field or using the down arrow to add or remove check marks for existing tags.
Using tags
Awesome Bar
Tags are most useful when used with the Awesome Bar feature. When you type something into the Location bar, the autocomplete results will include items that match tags. For example, if you've tagged http://www.amazon.com with shopping, books, and gifts, you can type all or part of each tag name. The Location bar will include the tagged bookmarks in its autocomplete results.
For more information see the Address bar autocomplete suggestions in Firefox article.
Library
You can think of a tag as a "virtual" bookmark folder. Unlike regular bookmark folders, a bookmark can be in multiple virtual folders. To access your tags in the Library:
- Click the menu button to open the menu panel. Click and then click the bar at the bottom.
- On the left side of the Library window, click the arrow next to the Tags item. The list of tags will expand.
- Click on a tag to show what bookmarks are associated with it.
- Double click on a bookmark in the list to open it in Firefox.
