Add-on Badges

Extensions or add-ons are software programs, typically developed by a third party, that allow you to add features to Firefox to customize your browsing experience.

There are more than 20,000 extensions listed on addons.mozilla.org (AMO), Mozilla’s official directory for Firefox add-ons. Most extensions are created by trustworthy developers. However, bad actors may put your security and privacy at risk by using extensions to compromise your personal data.

To protect your safety and privacy, you can use these tips to assess the safety of an extension before installation, or install extensions that are regularly reviewed by Mozilla staff. You’ll know if an extension is being regularly reviewed if it has one of the badges listed below on addons.mozilla.org (AMO) and the Add-ons Manager in Firefox.

Recommended Extensions

recommended badge amo

Recommended extensions are editorially curated extensions that meet the highest standards of security, functionality, and user experience. Firefox staff, along with community participation, selects each extension and manually reviews them for security and policy compliance before they receive Recommended status. These extensions may also qualify for promotions on the AMO homepage and other prominent locations. Developers cannot pay to have their extensions included in this program.

Extensions By Firefox

by firefox amo

These extensions are developed by Mozilla to bring new products, unique features, or pure whimsy to Firefox. These extensions are reviewed for security and policy compliance.

Verified Extensions

verified amo

Verified extensions are built by third-party developers and are reviewed for security and policy compliance. Developers of Verified extensions pay a fee to have their code reviewed. These extensions may also qualify for promotions on the AMO homepage and other places.

Verification means that the add-on itself complies with Mozilla’s security and policy standards, and does not mean that the account has been verified as an authentic public figure or brand.

Participation in this program is currently limited due to our capacity for code reviews, but we may expand in the future if more developers are interested in participating. If you’re an extension developer on AMO and want to sign up for the wait list, click here.

Sponsored Placement

Developers of Verified extensions can pay to appear in sponsored areas of Mozilla channels, including on addons.mozilla.org (AMO). Sponsored areas will always be labeled as such.

Caution label

Extensions that are not regularly reviewed by Mozilla staff will display this caution on AMO:
