I need help! :) Disclaimer: I'm actually trying to help a friend of mine, and I personally spent over an hour at my friend's apartment trying to fix his Firefox. I'm posting here so I can hopefully get some more tips from all experts here.

Symptom: Firefox completely hangs when playing back Flash videos (eg. Youtube). You can usually still hear the audio in the background, but the video freezes, and indeed the entire UI freezes. You can't even click the red [X] button to close the window at that point.

Workaround: Getting the Windows Task Manager up and killing plugincontainer.exe makes Firefox respond again, showing the "Plugin crashed" box in place of the video, and you can finally interact with the browser again.

I've tried the following:

  • Ensuring that he's running the latest Firefox (8.0.1)
  • Upgrading Flash to latest version - same problem before and after
  • Upgraded the graphics card drivers to the latest version (it's a ATI Radeon HD 3200) - same problem before and after
  • Created a new Firefox profile - still the same problem
  • Made a clean install of Firefox by wiping the program folder - still the same problem
  • Created a new Windows login account - still the same problem
  • Tried in IE - it works fine!
  • Tried in Chrome - it works fine!

I'm suspecting that this is some sort of graphics driver/flash issue, but what really boggles my mind is that it works fine in Chrome, which (I think?) uses the same non-ActiveX version of the Flash plugin.

Another piece of evidence that I think points to the device driver: running Windows in Safe Mode actually makes the video play fine (although very very low fps).

Any clues, anyone? I feel like I've tried all possible troubleshooting steps!

This morning also it froze up for a good 10 seconds and then it loaded the web pages again. Especially when i am browsing on a forum and return to main page or something. It just takes ages before i can select anything. It loads somewhat slower also but the part of it that i cannot select anything or scroll down before it stops thinking.

At first, the same night I decided to update--things were fine but after using the browser hours later a second time: some flash scripts would simply not respond and freeze the tab the content is on or like in my question, constantly stutter. The problem for flash videos only seem to occur when I scroll onto links or when moving up/down a page. I encountered similar problem with FF7--like that time, I installed/uninstalled the flash player and even resetted firefox but to no avail--the problem persisted. It is also present while in safe mode. P.s. such problem is seemingly not present in other browsers which brought me to ask this question for assistance.

When I hit the yellow circle to minimize the screens, they often will not restore. May work for a while when Firefox first opens, then stops. Often have to force quit Firefox. Also, when typing emails the speed can be very slow.

Running MAC OS10.6.8; over 221GB of hard drive available; 2 GB memory.

Can I go back to an older version or can this be fixed? I upgraded Firefox when I upgraded the operating system. Have gone back to Safari since FIrefox is now essentially unusable.

Network: Telenet Fibernet XL (189.85Mbps down, 9.45Mbps up, 9 sec latency)

Extensions: -Ad-Aware Security Add-On 3.7 -Adblock plus 2.6.4. -Adblock Plus Pop-Up Addon 0.9.2 -Ant Video Downloader 4.9.7.26 -Download Helper 4.9.24 -Easy Youtube Downloader 6.9 -Flash and Video Download 1.62 -Flash Video downloader - Youtube Full HD Download 6.1.2 -Greasemonkey 2.2 -Youtube Center 2.1.0 -Youtube AAdblocke 1.0

Scripts: none

Plugins: -Intel Identity Protection Technology 2.1.42.0 -Intel Identity Protection Technology 2.1.42.0 (I have this twice, not a clue why, though) -Microsoft Office 2013 15.0.4545.1000 -Microsoft Office 2013 15.0.4420.1017 -NVIDIA 3D Vision 7.17.13.4411 -NVIDIA 3D Vision 7.17.13.4411 (I have this twice, not a clue why, though) -OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems Inc. 1.1 -Shockwave Flash 15.0.0.152 -Silverlight Plug-In 5.1.30514.0 -Winamp Application Detecter 5.6.3.3235

Services: None

Now, whatever I do, such as typing, every 5 seconds I get a 2'ish second freeze. Often, I crash loading a new tab. I run appx. 24 tabs. Tune Up Utilities has Simultaneous Connections for FF on Unlimited.

Minor Questions: Why does my system, which is not too bad, does this? It should be able to run FF smoothly, no hangs, no crashes. But it does not seem to work this way. Do I have conflicting Extensions, or Plugins? Do I have conflicting Extensions that run amok with a plugin? Why do some Plugins appear double? Can I kill one of the doubles off?

Major question: How can I make FF smooth again?

Thank you beforehand: Xog

FF needs to become "smarter" about Restoring. Only do a chunk of say 10 tabs at a time, and improve the error recognition & handling so it doesn't just spin forever. Sometimes it doesn't even show the spinner; just won't respond & Activity Monitor says its Not Responding. Can't tell if the Not Responding is due to an active but CPU stealing process that is proceeding, or a stuck process where I should Force Quit. Just have to let it go for 10 minutes before Force Quit.

Restore needs to have a popup window that tells me exactly what tab it is actively Restoring at the moment, and a timer showing how long it was been working on that Tab. And I need to be able to tell FF how long to try before abandoning that Tab. I need to be able to tell it to abandon that tab sooner via a click button. Abandoned tabs go into a menu for me to mess around with later.

Noticed that mozilla.org is often "on top" when FF hangs up. And just now, navigating from the main mozilla page to here (3 layers deep?) I had to wait 5-10 seconds for each page to load. Is the mozilla server just underpowered for the amount of traffic, or what?

hi about 2 days ago ff stopped working. i type an address into the usual window like i've done a million times, hit enter, and nothing happens. i click on a bookmark, the url shows up in the address window, but nothing happens. there are maybe 3 bookmarks that still work, and all the rest are duds. auto-complete still works, but firefox refuses to take to the address. i get a lot of "flash crashes" (thanks, adobe) so i recently updated flash, and that started the problem. this is why i distrust updates. (for the record, i keep current with firefox updates, even though it is still bloatware that uses 2 GB just to run 3 windows. anyway, any help you could offer would be most... helpful! (not sure why my exclamation points are printing as open-brackets, but hey, whatever, that's the internet) thanks, tim

First thing, why is there no "register button" on the forums, tell your UI guys this IS confusing, not might be confusing, you have to go through this question submission to register at the forums. Been on the Web since I started hosting a BBS in 1988, I should not be confused. I should be browsing the forums right now looking for the right thread to get some help in. Wonder where this will be posted? I don't know, because this is confusing.

As I'm typing this my characters are freezing ever 15 seconds or so. Is there something wrong with the current build? I've had crashing and "not responding" problems for the last month and a half. Have removed all plugins and Add-ons (not cool at all) and then re-installed, twice if you include today. You see, since the last update, which I thought might be a bug fix, Firefox is now using most all of my ram, usually about 3.2 GB of it, no matter if there is 4 tabs or 15 (which I would NORMALLY have in my browsing, so I no there was a point where Firefox had no problem with this). That sounds like a memory leak to me. My question is: Is there something wrong with Firefox right now? Seccurity Essentials and MBAM both say I"m virus and malware free, which would make 4 years of being virus and malware free, I make an effort to browse smart, so I'm pretty sure that's not it. I'm attaching a link to a Screenshot I put in my dropbox of the threads tabs of Process Explorer, what are all these threads? Why is firefox running all these Threads at once. Is this normal? I cannot use Firefox right now, is there something wrong on my end or your end?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/8jtofcfn0wfybor/FFThreadsOpen.JPG?dl=0

Thank you, Adam.

For troubleshooting I have tried the following: disable addon's and restart in safe mode (did not help) disable theme and restart in safe mode (did not help) reset firefox (did not help) uninstalled Firefox & removed all traces of browser from my computer (yes even the registry was removed)

after doing the above I still had all my previous settings. I used IE to download a fresh copy and tired again. Still have all my settings, plugin's, tabs, and unremoved cookies and a little history

I am not tech savvy but the script errors made me think of Javascript. I went to about:config and searched for Java when javascript.enabled showed up I disabled and the problem has disappeared.

I know I need this javascript enabled. I cannot do much of anything at my site with is disabled.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this script hanging problem.

Thanks for any help.

I wrote a long thing in a comment box at the www.rollingstone.com website using Firefox for macbook as the browser. Typing into the comment box was going slowly and a then a window popped up saying "WARNING: Unresponsive script" in bold and then below it it says "A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script in the debugger, or let the script continue." Then below that it says: "Script: http://www.rollingstone.com/assets/js/built/desktop.bundle.js:185" Then there are 3 buttons:"Debug script", "Stop script", or "Continue", none of which respond. I think the text I entered is still there on the page if I could break this window. I am wondering if it is possible to recover the text I wrote in the box? The Debugger came on at the bottom of the page, but the window of the rollingstone page won't move so I can't bring it up to see most of the debugger. It looks like the script is some "RubiconAdServing." I downloaded a hxD editor, but I just get stuff on the right about the URL. In the advice I was given on another site, it says that I should be able to recover the text this way. Maybe I am clicking on the wrong thing to open with the Hex editor. There were no things in the upper left of my macbook window like 'file' for Firefox, but now they are there but not responding. Firefox is totally not responding, but there are a lot of other firefox browser windows minimized that are open and still at the bottom of the screen, but also not responding. How do you get into Firefox and recover the text? While I was writing the text on the Rolling Stone website, the writing within the tab would show that it had to connect to the internet to enter the text. When I went to the site I entered the text, it was not saved on the site. I can see some of the text I wrote on the frozen Firefox screen, but nothing moves. I am sure the text I wrote it still there if I could get through. How do I get into the Firefox webpage? All the other applications are working on my MacBook.
