The solutions I have read in the support forum for this problem are only for Windows. Please explain how to stop my Firefox browser ON MY MAC from opening a new tab as ask.com. It's extremely aggravating!!!!

I would've suggested the Reset of Firefox if I wasn't worried about you losing your add-ons and themes, so that's why I was trying to exhaust everything else before recommending a reset.

But glad you got it working!

Hi,

You can reset the new tab pref in about:config by doing the follow:

  • Go to about:config
  • Click the I'll be careful, I promise! button to continue
  • Search for browser.newtab.url
  • Right click it and click Reset
  • Restart Firefox

Sounds good but where do I find "about:config"? I used Spotlight to search for it and got no results. Please explain exactly where this is on my Mac.

more options

about:config isn't in your Mac. It's a setting on Firefox that contains all the preferences.

You can go to it doing the following:

  • When you are in Firefox, navigate to about:config like you are going to a website.
  • Click the I'll be careful, I promise! button to continue
  • In the search bar at the top, type browser.newtab.url
  • Under the searchbox you will see it. Right click it, and click Reset.
  • Close Firefox by going to the Firefox menu bar and click Quit or by pressing the CMD key, the SHIFT key and tapping Q
  • Reopen Firefox and see if Ask.com is still there.

Alright. I followed your instructions carefully, but it didn't work. The ask.com tab still raised its ugly head. So I decided to repeat your instructions, but this time when I right-clicked the Reset button was greyed out. What now?

And why does Mozilla do this kind of thing in the first place? IRRITATING.

more options

It's greyed out because that preference is already at its default state. You can't re-reset a pref.
By the way, Mozilla didn't install the Ask.com toolbar. It was most likely installed via a third party app.
Can you post your troubleshooting information?

  • click the Help menu and select Troubleshooting Information from the submenu.

Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.

  • At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
  • Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

I read in the forum that someone else tried reinstalling Firefox and it didn't work! It's a lot of trouble to go to. Getting rid of a default tab should be easier than that. I don't feel like spending the time. If it didn't work I might get violent. Thanks for you help though.

I was very hopeful this time, but sorry - no cigar.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

You can use one of these to start in Safe mode:

  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Open Terminal via Spotlight and execute this command firefox -safe-mode

Okay I thought I'd try something else first - a simple reset of Firefox defaults. THIS WORKED! Of course I've lost my themes and will have to reinstall AdBlock Plus, but my bookmarks are still there and the horrible ask.com tab is dead. Thank you very much.

I'm sure there will be other Mac users who will pose the same question. Thanks for taking the cautionary route with your recommendations.

I am having the same problem and I've tried everything other than starting in safe mode, because it's too scary to me and resetting firefox because I don't know how. What do you recommend?

Personally, I would look in about:config and reset the new tab page (browser.newtab.url) but if that doesn't work, then I would reset Firefox. The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.

  • Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

For Firefox versions previous to 29.0:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox"Button reset button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

For Firefox 29.0 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Reset Firefox"Button reset. Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.
