Firefox 28.0 extension = Downloadhelper by mig version 4.9.22

Seemingly simple issue that has gotten super frustrating. The extension won't "stick". I install, restart, it's there, it works perfectly. I close Firefox and when I open it again, the extension is gone.

I think I'm missing something really simple. A setting for the browser that would prevent this. Every time I open Firefox it behaves like its the first time I've opened it. None of my settings stay. I'd really like to start using it as my primary browser but I don't want to spend a bunch of time setting it up only to have it open "fresh" again.

What am I missing here??

Thank you!

With the extension is gone, do you mean that it no longer shows in Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions?
Or is only the toolbar icon gone from the Navigation Toolbar?

You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.json, extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

See "Corrupt extension files":

If you see disabled or not compatible extensions in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left end of the Search bar to check if there is a compatibility update available.

If this hasn't helped then also delete possible addons.json and addons.sqlite files.
