I use Firefox 24, and lately it's been freezing every couple of seconds. It seems to be worse whenever I try to type in a text box or open a new tab. I've disabled hardware acceleration. I'm confident it is not a malware problem. I didn't have this issue with Firefox 23 up until recently, and upgrading to 24 didn't help. I don't understand what the problem is. My best guess is that upgrading to Flash 11.8.800.168 did it, but Googling it didn't seem to reveal anyone else having these issues after patching.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

FirefoxSafeMode

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

Thank you, looks like that did the trick!

I have the same problem. This has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with my profile. It's just a case of substandard badly written software. On any complex page such as Google Image Search or Google Maps the entire browser freezes and locks up for several seconds at a time! Nothing responds - not even the system menu bar!

This clearly demonstrates low quality code running on the UI thread. Nothing happening in a tab should EVER freeze basic window elements like the menu bar.

Hi, KurianOfBorg,

If you have a similar problem with Firefox and the chosen solution didn't help you should ask a new question in the support forum. (See Mozilla Support rules and guidelines: ... For support requests, do not re-use existing threads started by others, even if they are seemingly on the same subject.)

You can use this link or the "Ask a Question" link on the Get community support article to start the process.

Thread closed to further replies. aw
