After leaving it for a while, I'm now trying to attempt to update my Firefox 2.0 on my Linux EeePC, having no idea what I'm doing. (Fed up of not being able to access various sites with an out of date FlashPlayer) I've been warned not to use Firefox 4 on my system, but can't find 3.6 anywhere now. It might not solve my Flashplayer problems, but I'm going to need something better than FF2 before I even try. When I try to "check for updates" though Ctl- Alt- T it says that no updates are available so I need somewhere that I can download it and then do all the fiddly stuff that comes with having a netbook with Linux... You can tell I'm not an expert, can't you!

I recommend first backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Backing up your information (copy whole profile).

You can download an installer for Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older

Please note the required packages: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6/system-requirements/

The version of Xandros Linux (from early 2007) that Asus was using on the EeePC doesn't have the GTK package needed to run Firefox 3+ versions, you need to update it.

IMO, don't waste your time installing a Firefox 3+ version on Xandros, it was slower than hell on my EeePC 900.

I replaced Xandros with EasyPeasy, which is created from Ubuntu', it comes with Firefox 3.6.

Thanks guys. That wiki article was the first one that worked for me- I find the replies on Linux forums pretty complicated for mac and windows lovers like me! Now comes flashplayer10... Or does EasyPeasy come with a flashplayer that lets me watch YouTube again? That would be so much easier!

Yes, it comes with Flash.

Although it does mean losing all my info, I presume? I had such a problem getting the wifi working on this machine. Although without flashplayer I don't go online much these days anyway, so it sort of negates that argument. If there was a way of keeping both operating systems it would be good, although I doubt my little machine could cope!

You'll lose all your current information when installing a new operating system.

Depending upon which version of the EeePC you have, and how many SSD's & how big they are (4GB is the size of the first, and whatever the size of the 2nd is - my 900 has 4 + 16 = 20GB), you may have room for two separate operating systems. But I don't believe that can be done without installing two operating systems from scratch, and losing all your data. You need to backup your home folder.
