I have a Mac OS X version 10.6.6 and Firefox 3.6.13. This is a stand-alone desktop computer on a private wireless network. I am the system administrator. I set the system password and a separate master password. Both the file vault and the firewall are off.

- Download a new copy of the Firefox program: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
- Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install.
- Install the new version that you have downloaded.
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

When I try to do so, I am told that an update is available but that I do not have the system permissions to install it, that I should contact my system administrator or try from an account that has permission to install software on my computer.

Did you download the Firefox 4 version from the link that I posted above?
Try to avoid updating and trash be currently installed Firefox version and install the full Firefox 4 version that you have downloaded.
