When in offline mode, first click the Firefox button, or if using the old style menus click the File menu, then click on the "Work Offline" entry to de-select it.

You don't need to open the home page to do that.

Are you saying that Firefox will not even start, if that is the case see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox+will+not+start
