Is it possible to set my bookmarks to "save to a list of "Permanent Favourites" like it used to..?

Everytime I reopen firefox anything I have tried to save as a bookmark is GONE?? I just Cant get on with this new Tb sytem.....
Does anyone know how to turn off the new tab system and restore the old way of a bookmark tool bar (which extended down the side of screen when opened and displayed links to all my favourite websites???
