Periodically lately I have been getting, on my HP Desktop w Firefox browser, a black outlined box about 3" X 2" popping up after I open the browser. It 'looks' official' or at least disturbing, and says, click on this link "MsMpEng.exe", but doesn't exactly say WHY you should do so. It looks like a hack but also official. Why would Firefox or Windows 11 allow such a prominent hack on the prime page? Can it be real? Very suspicious. happens maybe once a week or so last 5-6 weeks.

Firefox would never show such a pop-up with a Windows xxx.exe file. Clicking such a link will likely get you infected by malware.

You can verify that it is a real pop-up and not a window that looks like a pop-up and that is actually part of the page by trying to drag this pop-up window. You should close the tab and never click anything in such a window. The only pop-up for a password Firefox shows is for the primary password.

You can do a malware scan just to be sure.

You can possibly use "Forget About This Site" to remove remnants to this domain.
