How do I enable java on Firefox 82 on my Mac? When I search it tells me to go to preferences/content .... I don't have a contents tab. Other solutions say type java in the address bar... nothing.

Help?

JavaScript is builtin, so no need to download. If JavaScript isn't working properly then it is likely that you have an extension that blocks JavaScript.

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows a purple shield instead of a gray shield at the left end of the location/address bar in case Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking content. You can click shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection. You can check the Web Console for messages about blocked content.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Remove the Cookies" for websites that cause problems:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Data"

"Clear the Cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> Cached Web Content: Clear

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Is this really about Java and not about JavaScript as both are different languages ?

All browser have stopped supporting Java quite some time ago with Firefox 52. Firefox 52 and later releases support only the Shockwave Flash plugin and disable all other plugins, so you can no longer embed Java in a web page. See "Why-do-Java-Silverlight-Adobe-Acrobat-and-other-plugins-no longer work'"

Websites need to use Java Web Start (i.e. send a special XML file as application/x-java-jnlp-file) to launch a Java application in an external standalone window and can no longer use an applet to open a Java application embedded in a web page.

Cor-el, Thanks much for your reply, and yes, it does say JavaScript. So, I reloaded Firefox... nothing Tried to download JavaScript but their web site says I need JavaScript to open it. I was able to open it Chrome but only Java. A search on Java.com or Google shows nothing for JavaScript. So, I'm in a pickle. Can't use FireFox because there's several web pages that just don't load. I'd use Safari, but can't get rid of the advertising.

Ideas on solving the Firefox issue?

Thx Seevee

JavaScript was originally going to be called LiveScript which would have prevented the confusion between the two separate things like this over the years.

Co-rel Found the culprit, THANKS.

It was an extension named Script something (deleted it and cant remember the name) Went thru the trouble shooting steps you posts.

THANK AGAIN. Sometimes it takes an expert like you to just give one the tools to do the troubleshooting. Never knew about this process.
