Hi, Since the latest update, I'm no longer able to see the most used bookmarked sites from my address bar. When I now click on the open space of the bar I get a dropdown of saved sites but not the most used ones like I used too. This has happened in a previous update too and because I cannot find a fix solution, I'm forced to make a post.

I've tried going into tools>options>home>privacy & security but ticking and unticking of boxes has been unsuccessful. Any help would be gratefully received.

They seem to have removed this feature in FireFox 78 in favor of ad-supported search results. You'll probably have to downgrade to FireFox 77 and never upgrade. Turn on FireFox sync, let it sync, then install FireFox 77. Make certain that you turn off updates in your options > General afterwards.

Hi TheTuNa, as I'm sure you recall, Firefox 75 introduced a new behavior to the address bar: when the focus (cursor) moves into the bar, a list of your first 8 Top Sites from the Firefox Home / new tab page would drop down automatically.

There was a workaround for Firefox 75-77 to switch that to your classic frequently visited URLs list by disabling the Top Sites section of the new tab page. Sounds like you were using that. That doesn't work any more in Firefox 78.

So... what are your options?

(A) When you type a space into the bar, Firefox will show the frequently visited URLs list as a match for that, but it's not automatic/mouseable

(B) You could clean up the Top Sites list Firefox uses automatically. Firefox should fill up the list with frequently visited URLs after you clear out unwanted items, although this might take a little time to accumulate. Here's how:

Manual Cleanup Method

(1) At least temporarily, you need to turn the Top Sites section of the Firefox Home / news tab page back on: Hide or display content in New Tab

(2) Open about:newtab or about:home to display the Top Sites list. You can remove unwanted "Top Sites" by hovering your mouse over them, clicking the menu button that appears, and using either unpin (to let the site float back into a frequency-based order) or dismiss if you never want to see it. More info: Customize the New Tab page.

Flush Pinned Tabs Method

If you have never customized the list and want to clear it, you can try this approach I saw suggested on Reddit:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(B) In the search box in the page, type or paste newt and pause while the list is filtered

(C) On the row for the browser.newtabpage.pinned preference, click the trash can icon at the right end to empty it. (Or you can double-click the value to display an editing field, delete the contents, then press Enter or click the blue check mark button to save the change.)

You can manage the Top Sites list address bar drop-down using the Top Sites section of the Firefox Home / new tab page. It does come populated with a couple demo search shortcuts and some popular sites at installation, but you have control over the list after installation. Please see my earlier reply for how to do that.

Just going to permanently stay at 77 from now on. This is the 2nd time that they've [messed] up my address bar in recent history. First in version 75 and now again in 78. Staying at a known working version is a far better solution than letting Mozilla dictate what features they're going to turn off on a whim.

profanity removed. Please see Forum rules and guidelines

Okay, your computer/identity/life, your call. However, coming onto the official support forum and telling other people to use older versions of Firefox with publicly disclosed security vulnerabilities is, in my opinion, not something you should do lightly. As far as they know, you speak for Mozilla.

Note that you can use specific operator to limit results in the drop-down list like the '*' for bookmarks.

See 'Changing results on the fly':
