I Virus popup attacked my computer and all firefox browswer windows froze. I don't have any restore session options turned on. I immediately hold the power button for rapid shutdown. Then after a minute I turn on computer, But as soon as it boots up all previous windows of firefox open immediately exposing me to the same virus popup threat. I cannot duplicate this but it was very unnerving and problematic and I'd like to know if there's a solution.

Hi ewb99, You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which will work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Safety Scanner https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/ threat-protection/intelligence/safety-scanner-download

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware https://www.malwarebytes.com/premium/

Anti-Rootkit Utility - TDSSKiller https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tdsskiller/

MalwareBytes AdwCleaner https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/

ESET Online Scanner https://www.eset.com/us/home/online-scanner/

(Malwarebytes Chameleon - allows installation of Malwarebytes on an infected system https://www.malwarebytes.com/chameleon/)

Running more than one or all of the above mentioned Scan Tools is recommended since they scan at different levels of your computer. And, of course, run the scans with Firefox Closed.

There are also extensions available to help protect against malware, such as:

Malwarebytes Browser Guard https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/malwarebytes/

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware

ewb99 probably doesn't have a virus. This sounds exactly like a "pay us for software support" scam that's going around via malicious website ads. They abuse legitimate browser features to make the browser unresponsive (we'll be shipping some fixes soon) and put up a message telling you you've got a virus, trying to scare you into calling the "support" phone number on the popup.

The real question is, how do you restart Firefox without session restore kicking in and reopening the malicious web page? Is there a command-line option? Anything that involves going into Firefox settings is out because you're already stuck in the reopened attack before you can get there.

Would "safe-mode" help? The SUMO article about safe-mode doesn't even mention that there's a command-line way to trigger it anymore, and the menu option isn't going to work in this kind of situation.
