I had the now common "using an older version of Firefox, create new profile" to which I have now repeated the same process 3 times, then lo it all works, so happy browsing for over 3 hours, then I shut Firefox down, and then 15 minutes later open up Firefox and get told I am using an older version and need to create a new profile. Are Mozilla employing 7 year olds now?

It sounds like maybe your Firefox installation is damaged. I'd recommend uninstalling all versions of Firefox that you have installed (check to make sure that you don't have duplicates) and then reinstall it. But you want to make sure to do a clean reinstall, which will remove all of the Firefox files and ensure that none of the damaged ones are left behind.

Doing this shouldn't erase your Firefox data (bookmarks, history, etc), but I usually recommend that users back up their Firefox profile before uninstalling Firefox, just in case something goes horrifically wrong.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for suggestion, have done complete clean uninstall and new install so far I have had to create 17 new profiles every 2 to 3 hours, or if I use FF for 4 or 5 then on return, fou d thaf if I create new, and then delete all new profile contents and copy in old profile I manage to kerp bookmarks and passwords, something tells me that the people at mozilla must be paying in baby rusks, they dont seem to have anyone with past grade 1 intelligence, and I have had no response to any questions either, figures

What profiles are listed on the about:profiles page and in profiles.ini?

You get this message if you start Firefox with a profile that has been used with a more recent Firefox version, so maybe you either have multiple Firefox versions installed or you ever used a developer Firefox version (e.g. a Beta release) and Firefox rties to use this profile.

The compatibility.ini file in the profile folder stores the file path for Firefox that has last used this profile, so you can possibly check this file in each of the profiles you have.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Just as an update, grrrrrrrrrrrr. I got an update for Firefox on friday am which was halted due to admin rights (work machine). IT did the full wipe and install of new Firefox version on Friday. Used it all of the remaining Friday work, then this morning for regulations searches, all good (hoo f#ing rah). The at 9.40 am I try and open FF again and get the "Using an older version of Firefox can corrupt bookmarks and browsing history already saved to an existing Firefox profile. To protect your information, create a new profile for this installation of Firefox." WTF.

What Firefox version are you using and what version last used the default profile?

For the former you can check the applications.ini file in the Firefox program folder and for the latter you can check the compatibility.ini file in the profile folder.

Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:profiles).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

"AppData" on Windows is a hidden folder.

Hi, just to answer questions, the app.ini file has the following:

This file is not used. If you modify it and want the application to use
your modifications, move it under the browser/ subdirectory and start with
the "-app /path/to/browser/application.ini" argument.

[App] Vendor=Mozilla Name=Firefox RemotingName=firefox Version=68.0.1 BuildID=20190717172542 SourceRepository=https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-release SourceStamp=837bbcb850cd58eb07c7f6437078d5229986967c ID={ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}

I also attached a screenshot of the profiles folder

You can see in the first screenshot that the file is from Firefox 68.0.1 (Version=68.0.1) and not the current release (69.0.1), so that is an older Firefox installation. The second screenshot shows 6 xxxxxxxx.default-release-# folders (#7 was the most recent used) and one folder with a timestamp that was created in Aug 2018 due to using a refresh that you likely used before using Firefox with the dedicated default-release profile.

The compatibility.ini file shows LastVersion=69.0.1, so that profile was last used with the current Firefox 69.0.1 release. So you appear to have downgraded from 69.0.1 to 68.0.1 and that is why Firefox complains.

Please update to the current Firefox 69.0.1 release.
