Firefox tab hangs

A while back I started having problems with tabs hanging in Firefox. This happens arbitrarily, in any site, without any user input. It may happen with tabs that have been on the background for a long while or with a brand new tab that I just opened. I'm attaching screenshots for a tab (that was) showing Facebook and one for a new tab without any site loaded. Whenever this happens, there will be a "WebContent" process at 100% CPU. The only solution is for me to kill that process.

I'm seeing this in two different computers, work and home. The usage pattern between these two is quite different, although I do have Firefox sync in both of them. I've tried deleting my profile (rm -rf ~/.mozilla/) but that hasn't helped. I've tried using safe mode and couldn't reproduce the error, but since these crashes happen about twice a day it's hard to say for sure. There are no crash reports in about:crashes.

Any tips to troubleshoot this problem?

working with a new profile and no hw-acceleration

Use the new profile normally and see if the problem returns.

I've tried using safe mode and couldn't reproduce the error,

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or it could be Hardware Acceleration. How to disable Hardware Acceleration {web link}

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All Of them.

If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is, detective.

Thanks FredMcD.

I already have Hardware Acceleration disabled from a previous troubleshooting attempt. I also disabled all add-ons for a while but the problem persisted. None of this helped.

Any other ideas?

Edit: It's worth mentioning that while in safe mode I didn't find this issue, I'd have to use it for *days* before being confident that this problem goes away in safe mode!

I don't know Linux and called for more help.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes). If the problem goes away, that tells us one thing. If it does not, that tells us something else.

What Theme are you using? Try using the default.

Thanks FredMcD! I'm using the Dark theme (I think it's available by default?) and I haven't thought about disabling that. I'll try it now and report back in a couple of days.

Ok, that didn't work either (thanks for trying though!)

Now I have all add-ons and all themes disabled, working with a new profile and no hw-acceleration. Seeing it may take more than 3 days to trigger this crash, I'm not too keen on using SafeMode to find out if this problem is triggered or not.

Any other tips to debug this? Is there a way to trigger a stacktrace for a tab when I find this problem?

Do you mean re-enabling hardware acceleration? I already tried a new profile + hardware acceleration, that doesn't solve the problem either

Last update: I've seen this log after a tab hangs up. Not sure if it's related. (^C marks where I killed firefox). This is with no add ons, no themes, no hardware acceleration, etc.
