My bookmarking recently changed so that one click puts bookmark into library then again to put bookmark in place. How to close or delete Library I don't want

I have my bookmarks organized into folders. Until recently, I could click the star to bookmark a page, tell it where I wanted it to go and presto, there was my bookmark. NOW, I click the star and zip, bookmark goes into library, whatever that is, and then, I have to select bookmark AGAIN just to be able to file my bookmark. It's getting annoying. I don't know where this "library came from but, I don't use it, I don't need it, and I don't WANT it! How do I close this, shut it off or better yet, delete it altogether. Having needless doubled up data can't be doing my system any good either! HELP!?

Can Firefox also provide a similar checkbox option to de-activate Other Bookmarks?

Hi Jaykay, unfortunately Firefox doesn't have a built-in setting to select a different default folder for a new bookmark. But there is an add-on for that:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-bookmark-folder/

That lets you change the default folder from Other Bookmarks to Bookmarks Menu, Bookmarks Toolbar, or a subfolder, as you wish. But you need to go into the add-on's settings to select that.

Hi, there is now an option for bookmarks to save automatically in the dropdown, which you might have inadvertently changed - it's easy to do: You can click the blue star as if to edit, then select the 'Show editor when saving' box. You should now be back to where you were before!

The 'Library' is actually 'Other Bookmarks' at the top of the bookmarks list.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please help other users by marking the best reply as Solved. Thank you!

I agree with the original poster above ... this new LIBRARY overlay is a total dog. Just a waste of time and doubles the effort.

I have to do exactly what the post describes: bookmark, then select "EDIT" bookmark in order to have any control over where the newly bookmarked webpage goes to.

I do not want to use the sidebar, or star dropdowns etc as they seem to be only childs play ... useless. The above recommended solution does nothing.

Amazed the Firefox team let this Library item takeover like this.

HELP please, cheers, Jaykay

I guess we're the only ones bothered by this. Thanks for the mutual support anyway.

The "Edit This Bookmark" dialog that opens if you click the highlighted star has a checkbox with "Show editor when saving" (shortcut key in the dialog is Alt+S). This item is at the bottom just above "Remove Bookmark" and "Done".

New? The Library has been in Firefox since Firefox 3.0 which was released on June 17, 2008.

Perhaps you have been using an extension that modified the "Save a new Bookmark" and now that extension has been disabled.

If you update to the latest Firefox 66.0.4 version the problem with all extensions being disabled will be solved for you.

So confusing ... it must have been an extension. Always had the Other Bookmarks popping up as the default go-to bookmark location (can't get rid of it either).

Currently at FF ver 66.0.2, so will try the most current update offered next (66.0.5). I intend it solves the doubling-up of effort to complete a controlled-location bookmark.

I suspect heavy mobile users don't care about sub-folders as much ... just happy to have it in one central location on their device. So FF has catered to it.

Otherwise, love Firefox! Cheers Jaykay

Edited Response I solved my issue of Selecting-Bookmark-folder by following the recommendations of responders 'cor-el' and the 'ed-meister'.

I found the checkbox with "Show Editor When Saving" option during a 2nd round of Bookmark > Edit Bookmark when the newish drop-down box opened.

Checking "Show Editor When Saving" stops the 1st Bookmark action from defaulting Save-Location to the generic library.

I have update 66.0.3 in this macbook pro > Mojave macOS v10.14.2. Our windows 8.0 Pro is on 66.0.5.

THANKS to both responders!!

Thanks jscher2000! The new add-on does indeed "default" to Bookmark Menu as I would prefer.

Many thanks to you! Jaykay

My version is up to date- (re. the ed-meister's comment), wouldn't the "66.0.5" (which is what I have) be newer and therefor more up to date than the "66.0.4" "the ed-meister" referenced?

Frankly, I am just sub-competent enough to maybe barely comprehend what all is being discussed here. All I know is I think I may have applied something suggested here-in and that now I only have to book-mark a page once to save it so, I guess my problem is solved?!

Thanks to all who took time to share their knowledge and support for my problem. It is much appreciated.

Those two releases were very close together (May 5th and May 7th) so we might have made some typos in the deluge of threads. I think you are all good now.
