strange behavior with Firefox bookmarks that don't get properly saved

I'm using FF63.0.3 and a Mac with OS 10.11.6. Firefox works generically well EXCEPT sometimes when I try to save bookmarks, all hell breaks loose. I save them, they LOOK like they're saved, and I try to sync. The sync goes off in never-never land, and never finishes. Aaargh, I say, and I restart Firefox, whereby my new bookmarks are GONE! No memory of them. No record of being at them in my History. Now I should say that when I kill Firefox in this circumstance, I get an "Application not responding" error, so clearly something has already been hosed.

I should say that this happens occasionally. Not always. But it's pretty exasperating when it does, trying to recover those lost bookmarks. Normally, when I sync, it just takes a few seconds, and everything is keen.

Insights abut why, or how to prevent this? This has been going on for months, surviving re-downloading Firefox, and reboots.

OK, I'll report back.

I turned off all eight of my add-ons, and the problem disappeared. Then over the course of a few weeks I turned each add-on on, one by one, for a few days each. No problems. I now have Firefox working with seven original add-ons enabled, and I have no problems. The one add-on I didn't enable was a Cisco Webex Meetings Online add-on, that Cisco has informed me it is retiring, and so I deleted it. So, hmmm, maybe Cisco did this to me?

This has been a very frustrating issue for a year or so, but I have reached the light at the end of the tunnel.

If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.

We need to look at the sync logs. Type about:sync-log<enter> in the address bar.

Open the last file created and Copy its contents Now Paste it into this forum.

If the file is too large;

Is the file text only? And not huge?

Open a text / word program and load the file. Left-click once. Now <Control> A to highlight everything, then <Control> C to copy it.

Next, have your web browser go to; https://pastebin.com/

Paste <Control> P the content of the file in the window. Note: On the bottom, fill out the boxes as best you can.

Now press Create A New Paste. The page will reload. Copy the new web address, and post it here.

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

When done, copy and post the results here.

OK, I assume I'm supposed to do these things immediately when Sync misbehaves, since restarting Firefox sets things back to normal.

I'll do these things next time it happens.

Now, I do see that, even when things seems to be going well, that my sync-log is FULL of text messages titled like

error-sync-1542540489400.txt

A hundred or so every day.

Is this a worry that things are not right? In fact Firefox is chucking these messages out even when I'm not using it, but the program is open.

OK, this is the last error file. FF seems to be working OK, but is evidently upset about something.

I should add that this is what my sync-log looks like, just for the last 15 minutes. FF is upset about something.

Does an "error-sync" error mean that it's an error in trying to sync? I'm not that familiar with FF sync. It sorta works, but I never thought much about it. How often does it try to do that? I guess I assumed that one just sync'd manually, but maybe it's trying to do it a lot.

The error code/information will mean something to someone that knows the sync.

Let's see, have we just given up here?

I called again.

We need to declare this problem unsolved. Too bad.

I'm not seeing any messages related to bookmarks in the pastebin log.

There are some extensions related to bookmarks: 1542552170465 Sync.AddonsReconciler DEBUG Rectifying state for addon EverSync - Sync bookmarks, backup favorites 1542552170466 Sync.AddonsReconciler DEBUG Rectifying state for addon 404 Bookmarks

There are warnings about extension storage.

  • Sync.Engine.Extension-Storage WARN Syncing failed: Error: Server has been flushed.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

I ran in Safe Mode for a few days, and have seen no problems. So it is clearly an add-on issue. I'm now trying it with add-ons disabled that are specifically bookmark-relevant -- Default Bookmark Folders, 404 Bookmarks, and Eversync.

If you know of any problems with those particular add-ons, I would appreciate hearing about it.

That was very good work. Well done. Please flag your last post as Solved Problem so others will know.

Well, I solved the problem, but I'm really not sure what caused it or how I solved it. But the methodology left me with a working system.
