I am trying to test my website usage counting with Google Analytics. I use Firefox 99% of the time. Someone has suggested that Firefox may be blocking my attempts. I have noticed a shield emblem in the URL window, but not realized its meaning.

Yes, Tracking Protection* has Google Analytics on its list. You can confirm that for yourself by watching the requests sent in the Network Monitor.

To open the Network Monitor in the lower part of the tab, you can use either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Web Developer > Network
  • (menu bar) Tools > Web Developer > Network
  • (Windows) Ctrl+Shift+e

When you reload the page, Firefox should start listing all the files it is requesting, along with information about whether the request was successful. With Tracking Protection enabled, you would expect not to see requests to google-analytics.com, and certainly not the collect script.

When you use the drop-panel at the left end of the address bar to make an exception (stop blocking), the page should reload and now you should see those requests.

* In Firefox 63, this feature is now under "Content Blocking" - What happened to Tracking Protection?.

Thank you for your guidance. Our http://www.CollectiveNet.org/ website includes 38 pages that we are trying to keep a count of their usage with Google Analytics. One of those is our Home page. Our Home page has links to 12 pages that we are monitoring. One of those is our Resource page. Our Resource page has direct links to 30 of our web pages. 32 of our pages are HTML5 compliant. During the later half of October I have been able to verify that Google Analytics can count the usage of all 38 pages. My testing has been successful with these Web Browsers: Chrome, Internet Explorer, Edge, Opera, Safari and Firefox. I was confused by Firefox, my default browser, because recent versions have a built in Tracking Protection. This is indicated by the tiny shield icon left of the collectivenet.org in the URL box at the top of the Browser window. I was able to Disable Blocking Temporarily by clicking on the (i) left of that shield icon, then clicking on the [Disable Blocking Temporarily] button. That added a cross bar to the shield icon and let GA count my page views up to the point of my closing the Firefox browser.
