empty bookmarks
When I press CTR +SHIFT+B, I don't see any of my bookmarks or anything to left or right, its all white I can see the top headings though.
When I click Bookmarks (up top next to History, and Tools) I can see all my bookmarks, there are quite a lot. The problem happened after I had to power off at the electrical outlet and I didn't shut down Windows 8.1, and Firefox, because my computer had stalled overnight.
I need to see my bookmarks again when I press CTR + Shift +B

places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal are temp files and should be gone if you close Firefox. If they are still present when Firefox is closed then you can remove them as well. You can't open SQLite files in notepad or in another text editor, only a dedicated SQLite Manager application could open such a database for inspection. You can remove places.sqlite from the profile folder and keep a copy in a safe place for now in case you need to revert.

uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Perform a System File Check to fix corrupted system files
Do I need to close all other programs while I do this? Like my browser?
No, but you need to follow the instructions on how to use the program.

Command Prompt run as admin did not perform this: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
So I skipped that step and went straight to: sfc /scannow
Is that ok?

You mean the instructions with Command Prompt? It's running scan now.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.
- use "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page
See also:
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
If "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_process_the_backup_file_-_Firefox
You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
- Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Directory:
Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

Below are the results. What should I do now?
The online/cleanup-image/restorehealth option is unknown. For more information, refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?.
The DISM log file can be found at C:\windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log
C:\windows\system32>sfc/scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.

You need to post the report at Microsoft support and ask for help https://support.microsoft.com
Try to run sfc.exe as administrator to be able to repair protected files stored in a directory where you do not have write access as a normal user.
quote: > Task: checkIntegrity - Unable to check database integrity
This means that the file is locked and can't be accessed. This can be done by your security software. The way to proceed is to delete all places.sqlite files (or move the files to a safe location) with Firefox closed like I wrote above in the second part.

I tried administrator in safe mode too, same result.
cor-el saidYou can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_process_the_backup_file_-_Firefox
The link suggests I should "Remove or rename all files named "places.sqlite", " Will I lose my bookmarks if I do this?
You can check if there is a recent backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore
Firefox will automatically try to rebuild places.sqlite from a backup in bookmarkbackups folder when you remove places.sqlite. In some cases you may have to restore an older backup in case the recent backup in corrupted.
The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list.
- bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

... remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. about:profiles page.
In about:profiles I see Open Folder under: Root directory and Local Directory Which one should I click Open Folder to delete all mention of places.sqlite?
You need to got to the root directory location in a AppData\Roaming where the main profile folder is located. The other location in AppData\Local is used for the disk cache (about:cache) and other non persistent data like new tab thumbnails and safe browsing data.
Do you have backups in the bookmarkbackups folder if you check this in the Bookmarks Manager (Library)?
- Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

By remove you mean click places.sqlite and press delete?

Maybe just move the places.sqlite file to another location for now, then you still have a copy.
