So everyday I close FF with the task manager, to keep my open tabs for the next day (probably my 1st mistake). I've never had any issues with this. An IT from workplace had told me it was a terrible idea, so I can't say I wasn't warned. He never said why though! Today when I started FF and it displayed the last session and asked me if I wanted to restore it, I noticed an extremely high usage of the memory. Nothing was opened but that only window and it was using over 2 MB, it's never ever happened before. I googled it, I noticed it was happening to other people (I have windows 7 home premium and use a Sony Vaio laptop), I tried downgrading to a previous FF version, it didn't help, it was still using those 2 and up to 2.8 MB, without even displaying anything. Finally in this forum a user said that using the the latest version: 59.0.2 was the only thing that saved him. So I updated it again. I'm not certain how many times I closed the window using the task manager, but eventually when i reopened it, instead of offering the previous session, it only offered the home page and no way to recover the previous session. I typed this in the search button: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ and it opened what I believe is the profile? I'm not familiar AT ALL with it. I went to the sessionstore-backups folder (after reading a little bit in here about what steps to take) and to my despair I only found in there a few files, all of them really small, sadly and with really old dates! I was hoping to find at least 2 or 3 with today's date, but there are only two: recovery.jsonlz4 (time 7:45 PM) and recovery.baklz4 (same: 7:45 PM). II have no idea even if those files are the ones I should be searching for and even if they were, what to do with them. I should be specific about this though, the session I closed by mistake with the task manager, that was displaying the windows and listing the tabs so that I'd select which ones to open and such, I closed way *earlier* than 7:45, that's when I closed the 'home' page, which was empty, Btw this might be important. When trying to recover this missing session I read that there was the option to set Firefox to show windows and tabs from last time and I enabled it, maybe that's what messed the whole thing up. I have no idea what to do or even how to search for information cause I guess it's a bit too specific. And I have no idea what was going on earlier today with this ridiculous CPU usage by FF or if it's related at all to what happened (I disabled addons, and no use). Now that there's only that one tab open (Google as a home page) it shows normal usage. So strange. Please let me know if there's anything that I could do, I'm desperate! I had tons of open tabs and I wish I could recover them. I'm hoping my ignorance when it comes to FF, programming and computers are getting the best of me and it's not as bad as I think it is. I'm using Chrome as I'm typing this. I opened FF again so that I could post this using it so it can see the plugins, addons and stuff, but it makes me so sad to look at it, I can't. Besides I wasted the whole afternoon 1st trying to fix that horrible memory thing and now with the lost session, I can't. Active addons are ABP (which I blamed for the CPU usage, but disabled it and was the same) and a Google translate addon. Any help will be deeply appreciated. Sorry for the broken English, I speak in Spanish but figured I might be luckier posting in English cause more people understand this language!

Is that the only profile folder that you found in that location?

You can check if you have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop in case the Refresh feature in Firefox has been used and a new profile has been created.

You can check in Windows Explorer if there is a previous version of the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file available.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Hi intr0uble, sorry to hear about this problem.

cor-el has raised a very good question about possibly having other profile folders. I say that because the upgrade.js-build-id files in your sessionstore-backups folder are VERY old -- from the time of Firefox 55 or earlier. There should be 3 upgrade.jsonlz4-build-id files for updates for Firefox 56-59.

In addition to checking for Old Firefox Data on the desktop:

In the %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles folder, do you see any other folders, other than the one that has these ancient session files?

Note that you should use this startup setting instead of using the Windows Task Manager to kill Firefox.

I'm afraid I don't remember how to use the Windows Explorer? I used to use it when I had Windows XP but haven't done it in such a long time, I can't recall how. I know there's a way to find hidden files. If it's not supposed to be hidden, they should show up in the search button, shouldn't it? Cause if that was the case it doesn't find any: sessionstore.jsonlz4, however the search button isn't good for this I'm pretty sure, cause to test it I looked for a file that I'm looking at when searching that sessionstore-backups folder like: recovery.bakm and it can't find it (the search). I'll google how to use Windows Explorer. However I never ever did a refresh on FF though I've had MANY problems while using it over the years, when it was offered as a possible solution, cause I've always been afraid of losing what I lost today, ironically. I manually disabled the addons to check if they were the problem (with the memory not the missing session), since I read that that's what the refreshing does. I'm pretty that's not all it does, but I gave it a try! So no Old Firefox Data anywhere. In my about:profiles page it says: Profile Folder (instead of directory) and when I clicked on Open folder, it opened the same folder as it opened this command in the search field: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ In there I searched for the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file and didn't find any. Desperate as I am I searched for sessionstore only and came a few results, but nothing remotely close to sessionstore.jsonlz4.

A detail that's very relevant, maybe? And I forgot to mention. Before changing my last PC to another laptop (not this 1), I saved the profile I was using. Meaning I've been using the same profile since the XP days. Could that be the reason they're named that way? I've been using Windows 7 for ages though. Inside the profile folder there are many folders, besides the sessionstore-backups. What should I be looking for?

When you view a list of files, that's Windows Explorer, the program with the icon of yellow folders. (Not to be confused with Internet Explorer, with the blue "e" icon.)

The sessionstore.jsonlz4 is created when you exit out of Firefox, so you need to give it 10 seconds before looking for it in your profile folder.

Oh yes :( I lesson I learned the hard way today. It makes me so mad cause after I selected that option today, I didn't close FF with the task manager, and the next time I opened FF it opened right where I had left it open the session before, meaning it works perfectly. None of this would've happened if I would've been using that option in the 1st place ughh

No, unless you just updated to Firefox 56 or later for the first time, you definitely should have jsonlz4 files in the folder.

Oh yes! I had FF open, so sorry! I closed it and there it is, I saw the file! I'll check for previous version now.

The problem was me having FF open, so sorry! It does exist. Sadly though after searching for about less than a minute or so it couldn't find previous versions. Is that normal?

"Previous versions" are stored by Window when doing system updates or Windows backups, in restore points. So possibly you don't have any restore points on the system.

Doesn't Windows automatically does that before installing every Windows update, for instance? I'll do a little digging, I'm worried now hah

I'm not certain these in the screenshot are restore points created, however it seems to be that way, I could be totally wrong about this, I'm not that familiar with it, I haven't restored the system in years.

Okay, that suggests the profile folder we have been looking in wasn't backed up.

Have you shut down and restarted Windows since this problem began? Just to rule out some strange permissions or file lock issue.

Then please try this:

(1) Set Windows to show hidden files and folders:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

(2) Download and run one of these programs:

Within the most restore points shown in the program, you can explore along this path to see whether you can find a missing profile with more recent files:

\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

I haven't turned the laptop off since the session was lost. I checked it out and it was set I suppose by me previously, to show hidden files and folders. I downloaded ShadowExplorer but didn't really read what does it do? I'm sleepy lol Anyway I ran it and it's showing something but I can't tell what it is. A list of folders and files. Are those supposed to be system restore points? Am I supposed to do a system restore now? I won't turn the laptop off. I'll leave it on all night long and tomorrow until I'm back from work and I cn reread this when I'm not falling asleep, I'm so sorry! I wake up in a few hours but I won't be able to check this out til I'm back from work.

Where should I look for this: \Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ </blockquote> ?

I couldn't help myself and started digging lol It shows like the detail of each system restore point available, am I correct?I can barely speak in English being this sleepy but I guess that's what it does! I followed the path of the FF profile from 07 april 2018, however I'm not sure if it was cause FF was open ATM where the sys restore point was created (like today that I couldn't find it cause it was open), but there's no sessionstore.jsonlz4. Or could this happen now cause my FF is open now? It's related right? I'll check it out tomorrow with a fresher mind, but I'm not keeping my hopes up. I'll send a screenshot. I hope I'm just looking at the wrong place :(

If the restore point was captured while Firefox was running, check for recovery.jsonlz4 in the sessionstore-backups folder instead.

Hi! Ty so much for your assistance btw, regardless of where we go from here, I really appreciate it! So I checked on the April 7th 2018 sessionstore-backups folder and there is indeed a recovery.jsonlz4 in there!

Is there a way to get that file working on my current FF? Or is that like the 'picture' of what my FF was doing at that particular moment? Cause maybe I'm reading too much into this and getting hopes up way too early

That's promising, but... those files are huge. With LZ4 compression I would be impressed by a 1 megabyte session file, but over 5 megabytes makes me concerned that the file might be corrupted. Still, it's worth a try.

If you extract the file to your desktop for safekeeping, then you can try the "file swap" method -- hiding the current sessionstore.jsonlz4, copying the old recovery.jsonlz4 file into your live profile folder and renaming it to sessionstore.jsonlz4. In detail:

I'm on it! I'm wondering though cause I don't wanna make a mistake, I'm getting a bit lost. And about this part specifically: B) After exiting Firefox, hide the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file and the sessionstore-backups folder from your latest session <- how do I hide them? And also could drag and drop in the Session History Scrounger for Firefox only using FF? I can't do it in Chrome? I'm not certain about having to close it when doing the whole procedure and that being open not causing a problem! Besides this is the file I should be dragging: recovery.jsonlz4, right? And it is too heavy! Yesterday desperate trying to make FF not be using that many MB I was closing tons of tabs like crazy, which hopefully I'll be able to keep doing if the session is restored. Tons of tabs I no longer use nor need at all, but the ones I do, I can't miss! Anyway I'm starting it, and keeping my fingers crossed.
