Why does Firefox Quantum: a) run appallingly slow b) freeze up

I have just installed Firefox 57 (Quantum) 64 bit on my PC and my Laptop (both Windows 10 (1709)).

On both my machines, Quantum displays pages appallingly slowly and often freezes, when no tabs or the settings menu can be selected and nothing else produces a response.

I cannot believe that this software has been properly tested on users' machines at their homes - its deficiencies would have been blindingly obvious. Their is clearly a huge problem here.

I was so looking forward to returning to Firefox but it is a complete disaster.

Please find a fix soon or I will have to uninstall Firefox, maybe permanently. It is useless to me in its present state.

thanks for reporting this. can you try if this change can workaround the performance problem?: go to the firefox menu ≡ > options > privacy & security panel and under permissions check the setting to prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser.

hello, can you try to replicate this behaviour when you launch firefox in safe mode once? Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems

more options

ok, then we'd need to dig into this further. we're having over 2 million beta testers and no such issues have come up from them so we'd need your help in getting to understand the problem in more detail and your system environment that may be causing it.

could you go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information, copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum?

also, in case you happened to have any crashes recently, please enter about:crashes into the location bar, copy the latest few submitted report ids from there starting with bp- & paste them here into a forum reply.

thank you

Changing that setting has produced a vast improvement in displaying web page and switching between tabs.

Problem is solved and I can start to move back to Firefox from Chrome.

Thank you so much, Phillip!

If all these beta testers did not have this problem, how did you know what to do to fix it for the person above? Yeah right!

Where is this? I am in Privacy and Security and don't see what you wrote

I don't see Prevent accessibility etc in Privacy and Security Please let me know where it is.

iammax if you are in Privacy and Security scroll down to about the middle of the page under Permissions, it is the last option

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Some things NEVER change. I thought the amazing quantum was going to do away with all the old problems of Firefox but here we are doing what? The same thing we always do. 1) Blame extensions (Thought we fixed all that with the new chrome style extensions), 2) Say restart it in safe mode (have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in?) and 3) saying to turn off hardware acceleration and themes (look if hardware acceleration is such a common issue perhaps it should be disabled by default and those people with massive gpu arrays on gaming rigs can turn it on if they want). This is hilarious.

I just wanted to add I'm experiencing the same problems as the OP. Checking "Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser" did not make any difference.

Webpages often become unresponsive for 10-20s or so. Clicking/hovering has no effect. Often I switch to a tab only to see a message the tab has crashed. Pages load slow and too often I need to restart Firefox just to make it somewhat responsive again. Compared with the previous version, this is a huge step back for me.

more options

This worked for me: enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named accessibility.force_disabled. double-click it, change its value to 1 and restart firefox once.

more options

Hi and thank you for your answer. However, changing that setting to "1" is the same as checking the "Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser" option under "Options". So it was already set to 1...

more options

hmmm mine wasn't, it was set to zero even after checking the box on Prevent accessibility..... I changed it to 1 and mine works fine.

more options

I don't know but this version is unusable for me. Even when I type this, Firefox becomes unresponsive every 10 seconds or so and I need to wait another 10 seconds before it becomes responsive again.

Other tabs have become completely unresponsive. If I click the back or refresh button in those, nothing happens (even the click themselves on these buttons are not registered by Firefox.

The only thing that helps is restarting Firefox, but it's just a matter of minutes before the problems return.

more options

Try disabling IBM Security Rapport extension. This extension is not working properly yet on firefox quantum.

All I know is that there are 4 different computers in my house, two desktops and two laptops. About the only similarity between them is they are all 64 bit. After they automatically updated to 57.0, they were slowed down to unusability. And every one was fixed by uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling the older 56.0 version. I had to tell every one to NEVER automatically download updates.

more options

My system is 64bit as well. All I do all day long is restore crashed tabs. I really don't want to go back to v57 because I prefer the latest and greatest. If only they'd fix that "greatest" part...

more options

Well, the only way I could get Firefox to work right was uninstall the app, reinstall the old 56 version, and quick before it downloaded the 57 version, tell it to never update. You have to tell it fast though. I had to do it three times on one computer before I could do it fast enough where it wouldn't start downloading the update.
