Setup mail.yandex.com as default email client
I would like to setup yandex (mail.yandex.com) as my default email application, but can see no way to make this setting. There is no way to add yandex because the form will only let you select downloaded applications (this is truly idiotic) Mozilla doesn't do such a good job with apps that aren't yahoo

Not quite understanding what you are trying to get at. mail.yandex.com is web based with a login page to read your mail on line. So please explain further what you are trying to do or further expand on the problem please.
Let me try to do a better job of describing the problem.
Yandex is the email I want to use as default. When browsing the web and come across an email link I'd like to be able to click on the address and yandex opens. I see no way to make this happen, but if I did I wouldn't be posting. What I am after may not be possible. The dialog box that does open offers 2 choices, yahoo, which will never be on any computer I own, and gmail, neither are yandex. It has no place to enter yandex.
Hi !
In 'Applications' => mailto : have you tried "Use Others' ....... ?
Maybe this procedure still works:
Set the gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost pref to true on the about:config page (use its Search bar to locate the pref). It's value should turn to bold (user set) Open the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer; Ctrl+Shift+K) Paste this code in the command line (>) in the Web Console and press the Enter key to evaluate the code. An info bar should open at the top of the page and you can click "Add Application" to add the new mail provider. Do NOT forget to reset gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost to false after you have added this e-mail provider.
window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.yandex.com/compose?mailto=%s","Yandex");
