Open a link read/write in an external program from an extension

I'm using a plugin right now, in the old plugin structure to download files, open them and upload the changed version to the server. This uses the nsilocalfile to launch the linked application. This is deplrated right now, and I need to create a new way of doing this.

What I wan't to do, is allow the user to click a link in the browser on my web page, open this file in the associated program and when the user saves it, it should be saved on my web server as well. Standard structures do allow to download and open the file, but then it can only be saved locally.

Any ideas?
