<p>More precisely, the following has worked for me:
</p><p>"Reset mailto preference:
A preference setting may have been modified that is preventing Firefox from opening your mail application. For example, if you installed an extension that changed the the network.protocol-handler.external.mailto preference to false and you later uninstalled the extension, mailto actions won't work in Firefox (see below). You can see if this is the case and resolve the problem by resetting the preference as follows:
</p><pre> Type about:config in the Firefox address bar and press Enter
If you see a page with the warning message, This might void your warranty!, click the button labeled "I'll be careful, I promise!", to continue
Type mailto in the Search: (Filter) box
In the list of preferences, find network.protocol-handler.external.mailto
If its value has been modified to false (it will be in bold) right-click on the preference and select Reset. This will change the preference setting to the default "true" value and should resolve the problem."
</pre>
<p>Recommended to anybody who installed an extension that changed the the network.protocol-handler.external.mailto preference to false. This was my case.
Thank you for your cooperation.

My answer to your question above is "no". Checking this I even selected now "Use Thunderbird (default)" (was: "Always ask"), but this change has no effect on the functionality of the Email Link button - when pressed, it does nothing. The mystery is becoming greater and greater... I wonder if there will be somebody who will be able to diagnose the symptom properly (perhaps by asking me to copy and send the contents of a file or folder on my PC).

As far as I have tested, the mail to: preference is not in the list of preferences. It may be more reliable to copy the file from the Old Firefox profile data that stores that information over to the new profile:

Let me mention an interesting observation: my old laptop with Win XP synchronized its FF with my Win 10 PC - and the Email Link on the Win XP FF ALSO does not work! Amazing and mysterious. This observation is meaningful, I think, and a conclusion can be drawn from it (but what?)...
Anyway, I hope that one day after an update to FF my Email Link will return to normalcy. I understand that "clean" reinstall or Refresh is not worth the efforts that would be necessary to install all the add-ons and arrange all the icons... I think that we have to give up and I will classify the case under the category of "unsolved computer mysteries".

To my surprise (and perhaps yours, too) my "new" Firefox behaves as before, i.e., the Email Link does not do anything. Before you suggest a next move, let me know if the old folder can now be deleted. Its size is 91.3 MB (on disk).
</p><p>Additional info (could be important): as a result of running AdwCleaner on 19.07.2016, the following registry keys were removed:

Key Found&nbsp;: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{EE932B49-D5C0-4D19-A3DA-CE0849258DE6}

</p><p>However, I cannot state whether or not the "old" Firefox malfunctioned before or only after this operation. The removal of the above keys did not affect any of my numerous programs (at least, those that I used afterwards).
</p><p>One more additional piece of information: I experimented (tested) with two or three mail add-ons for Firefox offered by developers, but finally uninstalled all of them. And again, I cannot state if my actions related to this affected the Email Link.

</p><p>It only take a few minutes.
</p><p>(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 47.0.1 from <a href="https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/" rel="nofollow">https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/</a> to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.) <strong>For maximum plugin compatibility, choose the 32-bit version.</strong>

</p><p>The easiest way to rule out an extension as the culprit is to test in Firefox's Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

<p>Hopefully that will restore the previous behavior but, if not, it's possible that the file which stores application handler preferences has become corrupted. The file has a somewhat inscrutable XML format so it's often easiest simply to hide it from Firefox and have those settings return to their defaults. Here's how you do that:
</p><p>Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
</p>
<ul><li> "3-bar" menu button &gt; "?" button &gt; Troubleshooting Information
</li><li> (menu bar) Help &gt; Troubleshooting Information
</li><li> type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return
</li></ul>
<p>In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" / "Show in Finder" / "Open Directory" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders.
</p><p>Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:
</p>
<ul><li> "3-bar" menu button &gt; "power" button
</li><li> (menu bar) File &gt; Exit (or Firefox &gt; Quit)
</li></ul>
<p>Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename <strong>mimeTypes.rdf</strong> to mimeTypes.old.
</p><p>Start Firefox back up again, and Firefox should rebuild the file with default settings. Does Email Link work any better?
