Firefox 45 and earlier versions very unstable. Many lock ups. Have uninstalled and reinstalled. Went through the refresh. After refresh ALL addons re-installed themselves automatically but lost all my security and update preferences in refresh. All issues still occur in safe mode. All versions still giving me js script errors. Then 2 -20 minutes before it unlocks. My crash log shows 2 -10 crashes per day - for MANY months. Often firefox takes my computer to 100% cpu and all available memory immediately on startup (zero network use) for at least 10 minutes. Auto update turned off, all apps and addons are up to date.

Have thoroughly checked for viruses and malware. Can find none except for the mozilla addons which help themselves to my resources and bandwidth without permission. All issues persist even when they are disabled.

I am sick and tired of chasing the mozilla support pages around and around and around AND Around for no effect. I can't even find the support forum. This text box is my first access after countless hours of chasing HELP!

Having viewed and read every support page and every topic, it is clear that these issues ARE NOT NEW.

Once I hit "Post Question" I have no idea where to look for the responses.

Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in Flash itself?

I have now done this. It was complicated. I could not get to the flash menu because even though I had flash player set to default, it would not run. Somehow the extension for flash player was missing. I fetched a new one from mozilla and bingo. Flash is playing video. I then accessed the flash menu using the link sent to me by John99 (thanks). Turned off hardware acceleration within flash.

Success! My video is now working within FF using flash player. It is not perfect but far better then HTML5 player.

Tyler, thanks for responding. I find it interesting that mozilla has a history of ALL the crashing on my computer as I have always had crash reporting and health reports turned off in my preferences.

I was also under the impression that a refresh would turn off the addons. I am possitive that 99% the issues stem from addons. It did in fact turn them off. However, several minutes after restart, Everyone of those addons went out and re-downloaded themselves at the same time. My system was nonresponsive for nearly 2 hours and then crash/hang/and wait.

I can't really see anything useful in those crash reports, so lets do some more troubleshooting.

It's likely the you signed into a Firefox sync account after you refreshed, which would bring back all your add-ons. Can you try creating a new profile, don't make any changes, and see if you still crash? If you do, give me the crash Id from the new profile.

Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles

more options

Also, just to clear out any variables, please do the following before you try to crash in the new profile:

  • Update Windows. Even though XP isn't supported by microsoft anymore, you may not have all available updates installed. Please install them all.
  • Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware Since Windows XP is not a secure operating system, this may be a crash caused by malware. Please run the scanners linked in this article.

Ya know....... I have been running in safe mode for the last 20-30 minutes and it is performing very well. With one exception, youtube play back is awful. In low resolution and the entire video file has completed download, it is still jumpy out of sync and stops and starts. I think it is in HTML5 play mode as flash has been disabled.

I am not having any of the other problems I had all day and for months. I have also not seen the java script errors yet. "A script has stopped".

more options

I too, have experienced very poor video playbacks, had Flash run up it's cpu usage to over 100%, and one service (Netflix or Amazon Prime) suggested I use HTML5, so I believe it has been disabled on my FF, as well.... Constant crashes, constant Flash crashing, as well...

more options

I have created a new profile - no change. When addons are enabled - crash and lock. When addons are disabled HTML5 playback is horrible but the system does not crash.

I have also updated windows XP - nothing much. And did complete virus and malware scans - nothing - as I said before.

Now that we have gone through all of trouble shooting 101, I believe I know what the problem is. A combination of:

1) HTML5 video is not fully supported or it just sucks terrible.

2) Addblocker plus is causing some conflicts. possible cause of lockups. This used to work quite well. All add ons are up to date!

3) Flash player, which used to be fully supported causes all manner of interruption to my surfing pleasure. After turning it on and off several times to watch for symptoms - all the bad lockups, hangs and script errors happen while flash is active.

Thanks Steve, you were right on! Does HTML5 play any better on your computer? Mine is not worth watching.

If you disable Hardware Acceleration, are you able to run videos outside of safe mode? Turning off hardware acceleration

This sounds like you may need to update your graphics driver, Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL.

Keep in mind that Windows XP is a 16 year old operating system that is no longer support by Microsoft. As such, modern technology like HTML5 is not fully supported on XP and never will be. You should consider updating to a more modern operating system, for more reasons than HTML5 (security mainly).

Since it sounds like you are having issues with Adblock plus, consider uninstalling it and using ublock origin, which provides similar (in fact, better) blocking than Adblock plus, but with fewer issues and better performance.

Thanks for the suggestion. This issue may be at play here as I meet all of the criteria. However, my issue predates 45.0.1 by many months.

last things first - as soon as I installed Ublock Origin add on, FF hung until I got this error message - Script: chrome://ublock0/content/js/vapi-client.js:292

1) Hardware Acceleration - On or OFF makes no difference to HTML5 or Flash player. Symptoms are the same.

2) Graphic drivers - are the latest available from Intel. WebGL is active. I updated them several weeks ago thinking the same as you. No difference.

3) Yes XP is 16 years old. My computer is not that old but will not run MSW 7 or higher for many reasons. HTML5 did NOT just arrive nor did Flash. The interpretation and implementation of HTML5 protocols seems to be a crap shoot and I am not the only person having the same or similar issues. If this issue could be narrowed to XP platforms, you would be correct.

If Mozilla wants to stop developing for XP, they should stop providing updates.

HTML5 is platform independent and Browser specific.

I just tried surfing a bit with both Google Chrome and Internet explorer (I hate Both) The both work perfectly on XP sp3. It just kills me to see them both play video flawlessly.

more options

the codecs and software used to decode HTML5 video are different in the various browsers, and is restricted by a variety of patent law and financial (and ethical) issues. I'm not saying that we are dropping support for XP, we have plenty of users there who are willing to continue using it despite security risks, and we are willing to provide them with software as long as possible, but we are limited in the technology that will run (or run well) on XP.

You mention IE & Chrome. You will be aware MS stopped supporting XP & IE on XP. Chrome also stopped supporting XP

Thanks for the link but... Here are the directions to get to the menu. When I click on a playing image in youtube, I do not get this menu.

To view the Display panel:

Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Macintosh) the application image during playback.
From the context menu, select Settings. The Display panel is the first panel shown.

</blockquote>

I understand that you can not assume that I know anything. So, please be my guest and feel free to interject anything you think is completely obvious. However obsolete, IE & Chrome work perfectly on my computer. And, the browser I have chosen to rely on for many years does not any longer.
