Is there a way, be it addon or another function, to close one non-responsive tab but leave Firefox as a whole running?

I need to use Firefox for work and having to kill the whole browser when I run into this problem is getting really old. Is there a way to keep my previous tabs running and just kill the non-responsive one that I just opened? Thanks for any ideas.

Any problem with simply clicking the X on the tab to close it ?
Or keyboard shortcut Ctrl + W

If Firefox itself is totally locked up then see firefox hangs. You should try to workout why this happens, is it always on the same or similar sites? or when a particular application is used?
