New tab defaults to address bar

I use a new tab add-on. My new tab homepage is set to Bing. When I open a new tab, the cursor defaults to the address bar which has a URL in it. I want the cursor to default to the search bar on the homepage, not the address bar. It did this previously, but something has changed. To make it worse, the address bar is filled with a URL, so I can't simply type without having to delete the text.
