When I click on + (to open another tab) I get "istart123"... used to get a selection of often used websites. How do I get rid of istart?

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar and search for prefs that refer to istart123. You can reset user set (bold) prefs via the right-click context menu to the default value.

You can check for recently installed suspicious or unknown extensions.
