After updating to Firefox 4.0, the new Bookmarks button that supposedly would be at the right end of the Navigation Toolbar, next to the Home button, is instead at the right end of the Bookmarks Toolbar, with a text label. This has crowded out some of my own bookmarks, and I can't find any way to alter it. Incidentally, another user on the same machine, in a separate login, doesn't have this problem.

That Bookmarks button is tied to the implementation of the orange Firefox button and the fact that it hides the Menu bar, which has the Bookmarks Menu drop-down which is gone when the Menu bar is hidden. That particular button's customizable location is dependent on the Bookmarks Toolbar not showing.

I think what might be needed is an extension that converts that button into a full-fledged Toolbar button that cuts the "tie" to the state of the Bookmarks Toolbar.

I see: the Bookmarks button goes to the Navigation Toolbar where it belongs if the Bookmarks Toolbar is turned off or goes away entirely if the conventional Menu Bar is turned on. I guess for the time being I just have to restore the Menu Bar and do without this "innovation".

Thanks, edmeister.

Maybe I didn't explain that too well, Ill try again.

The Bookmarks button "belongs" on the Bookmarks Toolbar. You can move it to "anywhere else" you want it, but it will always be displayed on the Bookmarks Toolbar when you have the Bookmarks Toolbar visible. It will only show "anywhere else" when the Bookmarks Toolbar is hidden. "anywhere else" is not dependent on whether the Menu bar is showing or not.

At least that is my observation of how it works for me on WinXP.

Edmeister, thanks again. I said the Bookmarks button belonged on the Navigation Toolbar because that's where the Firefox upgrade introductory page showed it, although on reflection that was probably without the Bookmarks Toolbar displayed. In any case, I don't need the button as much as I need all the space for bookmarks I can get, so the button is unwelcome in its default location. Now, if the button text label could be turned off, it wouldn't be so intrusive, but unlike the bookmarks, its context menu doesn't include its own Properties. I can't find anything directly customizable about the Bookmarks button, wherever it's displayed as controlled by fiddling with other things. Oh, well. I can live with the old-style menu, which solves the problem.

I had the same problem. Try removing the drop-down Bookmarks button from the Navigation Bar.

roryjs, thanks. That seems to successfully dispose of the wandering button without disturbing the configuration of other features. It would still be better if the button would just stay put on the Navigation Toolbar unless specifically moved elsewhere. Then, it would sometimes be moderately useful.
