Upper Right-hand Corner
In the upper right hand corner there should be a minus sign, restore/down sign and an X. Instead of these I have what looks like an X in a box. It appears to be fixed when I run in Trouble mode. Even the default theme shows it wrong. This just began happening. Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

I know that you tried troubleshooting mode. The last part of the article that I suggested you read explains what troubleshooting mode does. That explanation indicates the possible sources of your problem. You may be using an add-on that is incompatible with your current Thunderbird version. That's my guess, and it's probably that custom theme that you are using, which was rendered incompatible by a recent update to Thunderbird. If that is the cause, then you should stop using that custom theme and, if you want to use it again in the future, wait to see if the developer updates it.
