After uninstalling and reinstalling I still can't open firefox. Firefox unexpectedly closed yesterday and haven't been able to get it to open since.

Can you open Firefox in safe mode? Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox

If you can, disable Hardware acceleration, Turning off hardware acceleration

You can check if you can start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift/Options key.

I'm still having issues. Simply attempting to open firefox crashes it. I can't even get the browser window to come up.

Did you try the steps we suggested above?

Later today there will be a Firefox 38.0.1, please download it from www.getfirefox.com and install it. It contains a fix for a startup crash. Let me know if that helps.
