I have had trouble getting mail on one (and only one) of my computers. When trying to send today, I received an error message in TB that I needed to change my password. I looked for a way to do this, but found none. I did, under preferences, look at stored passwords on the machine which is unable to send. Only an authentication password for Oath (Yahoo), remains, but the password to log in to my email account for both sending and receiving is gone. Both exist on my other machine. How do I re-enter my password for this account?

I don't see where to change the password. I see where the password is saved, but not where to actually change the password for the account.

Thunderbird will not accept my email password. Online access to the account (hosted by Google, IMAP) is fine and the password works. Sending email through Thunderbird rejects the (known correct) the SMTP password. Nothing I do can overcome this. Email retrieval works fine. Help! Config: OSX 10.14.6 Thunderbird 91.4.1 email configured as IMAP email server at Google

I have TB 91. set to a pop server using SSL/TLS but got a message from gmx saying I will not be able to receive emails on TB AS IT USES OUTDATED SECURITY ... After the protocols TLS1.0 and TLS1.1 have been deactivated, the transfer of emails between your affected device or program and our GMX servers will no longer work; i.e. no emails will be transmitted to or from your GMX email account using TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1. Third-party email programs such as Outlook, Thunderbird or pre-installed apps in which you have set up your GMX email account.We recommend that you only use newer devices and programs that support the latest TLS 1.2 or 1.3 encryption protocols and transfer your emails securely. Thunderbird REPEATEDLY Keeps Marking Non Junk As Junk giving me a daily headache in manually marking them as NON junk. I very rarely receive junk email, and those I do receive stick out like a sore thumb. I'm capable of deciding myself what is and is not junk. How to TOTALLY disable junk filtering? I mean TOTALLY, not the "usual" fixes given which don't work. There must be something in the config editor I can adjust, surely. Thank You Regards George

I have changed my BT Internet ident password. My emails are accessable on BT Internet email but not on my Thunderbird software. I have changed the password for each of my three accounts but when I try to access my emails via thunderbird it tells me it is not recognised and asks for yet a new password. It also worked once and now has returned to 'no access' to my BT Internet account. Very confused. regards Graham Hadley

I decided I needed to use a password to enter my emails. By following my nose, I went to settings and checked the box to use a primary password. It then asked for a password. I typed it in... twice. Once, then confirm. Now, I can't enter my email no matter how many times I type in the password. I've tried resetting the password by going to chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xhtml. It says password was reset but nothing has changed, it did not ask me for a new password, and I still can't get in. Frustration has set in. Thank you for any help you can give tome.

After today's update of TB to the latest version (91.8.0), the system still requires a login to a Google account. When I enter the data, nothing happens. I can't download or send any mails.

So far everything worked without problems, the authentication method is specified OAuth2, mail client as POP (not IMAP).

Don't you have any recommendations? thanks, Jan

running latest TB version OAUTH2 settings done (imap and smpt) cookies and java enabled os is win7

Finally got TB to authenticate connecting to gmail account via OAUTH2 - only after full system reboot -- If TB left running after successful connection - mail works fine for maybe an hour, then TB gives a failure to authenticate error and no connection to gmail works. Closing TB and restarting does not help. Only possible to connect after a full system reboot. After a full sys reboot, TB will authenticate to gmail account and mail works. If TB is closed and restarted, gmail account authenticates _IF_ done within the first hour. Otherwise TB gives a failure to authenticate error.

Any idea what I should try next?

my university IT does not support Thunderbird, and has been warning me that on Oct 1, "basic authentication" will be retired. As a non-tech person, I could not understand the reply to my questions. A tech person I know could not figure out what to do, but he would be able to implement whatever instructions are given in response to this inquiry

Below is the answer IT sent me:


Technically what is being retired in October is basic authentication; I can confirm that your account is using basic authentication. Usually I can also provide a UserAgent string as reported by the client, but in this case whatever basic authentication client you are using is only reporting "-" as the UserAgent (normally that would display something more helpful):

I have a different report that lists users of IMAP based on protocol logs, in which your NetID does appear so my guess is the above is Thunderbird, but I cannot be 100% certain.

You are correct that Emory does not support Thunderbird. Newer versions of Thunderbird do support modern authentication. I can send links to configuration pages (e.g. the Wisconsin help page at Office 365 (Thunderbird) - Configure Modern Authentication (wisc.edu)) but cannot offer help if you have difficulties getting modern authentication working properly within Thunderbird. OIT's official recommendation for email clients is to use Outlook (either as a client, or via Outlook on the web and Outlook Mobile).

Ultimately it's the permission to use basic authentication which must be addressed prior to October (as Microsoft themselves will be turning off basic authentication at that point, and we will not be able to grant any exceptions so clients will break). I can remove your permission to basic authentication when we believe that you are no longer using it (or, if we need to figure out what the above client is, to disable *temporarily* and see what breaks). You will always be able to use Outlook on the web (http://email.emory.edu) to read your mail even if we disable basic auth and that breaks your preferred client.
