I use Linux Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and this operating system has an automatic Backup programme included. My Backup Plan copies my Home folder to a separate hard drive. I note that Thunderbird stores my emails in a Profile and that this is stored as a Hidden Folder in the Home Directory. As I am backing up Home, can I safely assume I am automatically also backing up my Thunderbird emails. Or do I have to manually back them up as mentioned in some help articles.

My Thunderbird hangs for a long period of time (~30 seconds for a text only e-mail, up to 10 minutes for an attachment) when a message is moved to a folder. This includes the copy that is generated in the Sent folder when I send a message.

The window will gray out and be unresponsive for the period of time, and will require me to either wait it out or to force quit. When the program is frozen the rest of the computer will not be affected, and I can use other programs. Outside of moving e-mails I don't have any other difficulties with Thunderbird.

I am not sure if this is pertinent information: When I browse into my Thunderbird directory and look at the local folders I notice that some of them indicate that they are conflicted copies. (See image). The problem occurs for both the conflicted folders and the ones which have a regular file name.

I am using Ubuntu 14.04. Thunderbird is configured with multiple IMAP accounts, from which I save the important e-mails into Local Folders. The problem occurs equally when moving files from the IMAP server to Local Folders, or when moving messages between Local Folders. I occasionally compact folders and move old e-mails to the archive, additionally it has the same problem when I try to move messages to a newly created empty file.

Thank you for any help anyone can give!

On my desktop system I pull mail from the server with POP and use mutt to read the messages. Thunderbird also pulls copies for those times I want to view the rich, html content of a message.

When I'm away from my desk, working on a laptop, I'd like to view the mail in TB without pulling a 3rd copy from the server. But my websearching says remote viewing is not possible. Then I tried something that seems to be working quite well but I'd like to hear if there are any 'gotchas' that I might encounter.

I used sshfs to mount my desktop's ~/.thunderbird on the laptop's ~/.thunderbird. When I started TB it came up with all my folders and I could read, search, and send mail with excellent performance.

Are there potential problems I've not yet encountered? BTW my uid and gid are the same on both systems. Also, while there is an instance of TB always running on the desktop, I would only be active on one system at a time.

Thanks, Jon

This often happens, and it stops your support from being any use to me. My current problem is, for instance, that I just want to change the default browser that is opened when I click a link in an email. Your solution page for this (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/make-firefox-your-default-browser) directs me to "preferences", "general" (no problem to find this) and then to a button "make default" that is just not there: my "general" tab window (see encl. screenshot) looks totally different from what you show. I work under Freshbook, an adaptation of Ubuntu.

Installed Thunderbird updates(1:45.5.1+build1-0ubuntu0) from Update Manager.

Tbird failed repeatedly on startup.

Found Tbird was dying while loading add-ons. Started Tbird in safe-mode.

couldn't disable add-ons with Tool menu b/c Tbird died first.

Renamed usr/lib/thunderbird-addons/edsintegration@mozilla.com.xpi file and ran in safe-mode,

Tbird would stay alive awhile but always died w/in 10 minutes.

Removed 1:45.5.1+build1-0ubuntu0 with Ubuntu Software center.

Re-installed Tbird older version, 11.0.1+build1-0ubuntu2, which had worked flawlessly.

Older version now dies.

Moved to safe mode, renamed usr/lib/thunderbird-addons/edsintegration@mozilla.com.xpi.

Now Tbird stays up long enough to get something done.

Rebuilt global-messages-db.sqlite - No change.

Current state SOL & downriver w/o paddle. Seems that Ubuntu, rather than leaving me alone in my trusty 11.0.1+build1-0ubuntu2 canoe, tossed me a bucket of snake venom.

Advice?

google asked me to upgrade security a while back and whatever I did, when I open Thunderbird now it asks for a password to log in to the server, which I do with my usual Google account password. After trying to open one email this morning, Thunderbird started refusing the password when entered, also refusing to accept a changed version, and refusing to open this email, even when it has been shifted to trash. So far I have gone into Settings and tried changing the security on the ingoing and outgoing servers as per other advice for this problem. Either Thunderbird refuses to accept the alternatives suggested, or it says they are not acceptable forms of security. This included getting rid of the any security or putting in "OAuth2" as an alternative to a password. Meantime I can't send emails. though I did receive one in on my gmail account. Any suggestions?

I have all the symptoms of: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/calendar-updates-issues-thunderbird

However I've gone through the process of removing the value from the config registry, and uninstalling lightning 4 times and it all comes back after a restart.

I installed an entirely new profile and it does the same thing.

I sometimes get into a problem where lightning and google calendar are both there (though I suspect that lightning shouldn't be) and the UI is unresponsive and it eats memory until my desktop crashes. (which is a LOT of memory, I have 32gb)

I really need google calendaring in thunderbird. I would "like" not to have to start over with a new profile.

I got into this by installing a new Opensuse 15 desktop and copying my profile from my backed up Opensuse 42.3 system. Paths are all the same and this has always worked before.

I'll be happy to perform whatever experiments you like... wcn

I am using Linux Mint 18.3. Mozilla Thunderbird 52.6.0 (64-bit) Please, make it possible to input Master Password only one time, in case if i have more than one E-mail account. Because I have to enter three times Master Password in case if I have 3 accounts. Next issue, The program provides access to the correspondence, even if the password was not entered. It is not clear why it then needs. Just to update the inbox? I can close the password window and read e-mail. I used The Bat before on Windows platform, so Master Password work another. I open the program, it asks me the password, if I don't enter it or make it wrong, the client doesn't allow me to open the program. And I do it just one time when I open it. It is not required to do it for each e-mail account, linked with program.

Recently I updated to Thunderbird 45.2 on Ubuntu Gnome. It is set up with two email accounts (5k and 10k emails), and I use unified folders. After the recent update to TB 45.2, whenever I select the unified Inbox folder (only the Inbox folder), Thunderbird starts to use 100% CPU for about a minute, before it responds normally again. Again, if I select the unified Sent folder (which contains about the same amount of emails) TB does not hang. It also does this in safe mode. I have tried compacting the Inbox folder, and I deleted global-messages-db.sqlite from my profile folder, nothing helped.

EDIT: Once the unified Inbox is loaded, the Quick Filter works as usual (i.e., fast), however clearing the quick filter text results in the one-minute-100%-CPU-hang. This does not happen if I do the same procedure while one of the Inboxes of the two email accounts selected.

Any suggestions?

Cheers Lasse

Hi, I'm struggling to get my old emails onto thunderbird. They're .dbx files held on a memory stick, copied directly from Outlook Express I've tried various methods for the emails to no avail, the latest and most feasible being undbx which I have downloaded and extracted the files. In the read me file I find

"You should end up with several files/icons in that folder: - the **UnDBX** executable ``undbx.exe`` - the **UnDBX** HTML application ``undbx.hta``, which serves as its

 graphical user interface

- this ``README`` in HTML format - the GPL v3 license (``COPYING``) "

but there is no executable file.

Then:

" Just double-click either of the ``undbx`` icons that you've extracted from the distribution ``.zip`` file. A simple dialog box should appear. "

but there are no undbx icons to click on and so no dialog box. I think I've clicked on everything just on the off-chance!

What have I done wrong? I'm afraid I have an extremely limited understanding of computing technology and wonder whether this undbx program is going to be beyond me and whether anybody has any other suggestions. If I try command line stuff I'm really just guessing my way around for example, and would be better off using a mouse in a window/dialog box. Final question: Will I be able to import the emails in their respective sub folders retaining the original structure of my email folders?

I'm just wondering whether I should try to find a simpler route? I must admit to being fairly astonished that given the capabilities of thunderbird in general, it can not recognise and deal with a dbx file!

I'm runnung Zorin os (Linux). Many thanks in advance and hope someone can help! Justin
