Because Thunderbird wouldn't accept new passwordfor SMTP server, only POP3, I tried to resolve it by deleting the account from tools - account settings and then re-entering the account with the new useername and password. It works but then all my downloaded emails are gone! How do I get them back - they must be somewhere on my computer as I've not actually deleted the emails just the account.

Like one of your previous questioners, I have an unfixable security certificate within Eudora (ver 7.1) and I want to migrate its address book, settings and mailboxes to Thunderbird. During installation, migration from Eudora is offered but greyed out. What can I do about that apart from trying the previous questioner's solution of using an old version of Thunderbird? My OS is Windows 8.1

Greetings. I am a new Thunderbird user migrating from Outlook 2013. I am on Windows 7. I am using IMAP.

My previously working saved folder structure in Thunderbird is not updating when I make a change to the folder structure on my email server.

Everything used to be OK but then when I noticed that the "saved" folder on TB was grayed out (I suspect because there was no email in that folder but tons in the subfolders). I think mistakenly I attempted to rename the folder "saved" to see if it would have darker text. Then I noticed a flurry of activity in TB subscribing and unsubscribing to folders and ever since I can see all of the folders under the saved folder but there used to be subfolders of these and now they do not display. Making changes on the server to folders is now not recognized in TB either. All of the subfolders I want, I have verified are still on the server with emails in them.

Is there some way I can "start over" and get the folder structure in TB synced with the folder structure on my server.

I did notice that when I deleted a not valuable folder in TB as a test, it was immediately deleted on my server so the sync is working in that direction.

Thanks in advance for help. I am trying hard not to loose valuable old emails on my server. Otherwise I am loving the new client.

Gifted a Galaxy Tab, set it up with my Gmail account. My Windows 7 Pro x64 with Thunderbird was working perfectly. I then made a huge mistake, due to my security concerns, and changed my Gmail with their 2step verification. Disaster !! No Thunderbird incoming/outgoing from my Gmail account. Reversed the process completely even allowing for 'non-secure' devices.

Thunderbird works perfectly in Yahoo and Hotmail; Gmail is the culprit.

Worked for my incoming Thunderbird emails but I'm unable to send any. I've rechecked my outgoing server settings 5 times and it is configured exactly as shown herein. My tablet can send/receive Gmail, Thunderbird only receives.

Getting help from GMail is like...

Thank you!

My problem is similar to two others listed, but just occurred when TB updated to 38.6.0 yesterday. Lightning disappeared and is not listed under Tools, Extensions. After starting TB, the error console shows:

I haven't tried reinstalling TB or Lighting because I'm concerned about losing settings, messages, calendar items, etc.

I have an old Toshiba Satellite A205 laptop, running Vista and Thunderbird 3.1.14. I want to move all the emails to another computer, currently without Thunderbird installed. I have copied the Users/owner/appdata/roaming/Thunderbird/profiles directory to a thumbdrive.

Question: Can I install the current version of Thunderbird on the second laptop and then copy the profiles directory from the thumbdrive to the same named directory on the new laptop/current version of Thunderbird? Will it work?

I run Firefox as my default browser on all my computers.

A while ago I gave up using an old XP PC and Outlook Express, and moved over to a new one and Thunderbird, but never had the time to get TBird organised properly: now I do and starting to think about it.

Email was imported into Thunderbird from OE and, ever since, an extensive set of my own storage/filing folders and subfolders that were in OE (where I moved/redistributed Sent and Received messages) have been sitting within a folder called "Outlook Express Import", which itself sits inside Local Folders -- it's where the import process put them.

Also in Local Folders is a unified Inbox etc for the multiple accounts existing at the time of the changeover/import. All mail on these pre-existing accounts currently comes into and goes out from the unified folders. Several older addresses from a previous ISP are still in use to an extent, in addition to ones with the current ISP, and all were/are POP3. The unified Inbox etc for multiple accounts was fine as I was used to it in OE, and in many ways prefer it.

Quite recently a couple of new/additional email accounts were created for the first time since the changeover, and Thunderbird put these outside Local Folders, each with their own Inbox, Sent and so forth. It's given me the chance to see how I get along with separate Inboxes: not sure yet, but meanwhile a couple of questions.

(1) If I DID decide on separate Inboxes for the older ex-OE accounts, rather than unified, how do I achieve this? Maybe I used the wrong search terms, but so far haven't found how to move them outside of Local Folders and the unified setup, which Thunderbird organised while importing.

In the wizard would I set up another (duplicate) account in each case as if it was a new one, but call it something slightly different and enter the relevant details, so that TBird then created it outside of Local Folders? Then delete the older entries once these were created? Seems a longwinded method, and also not sure if TBird would allow it if it detected details were identical to an existing account? Is there a better way I haven't found?

(2) The "Outlook Express Import" folder seemed rather superfluous once the importing deed was done -- an extra level in the folder structure that wasn't really necessary.

What I'd like to do with all the many folders inside it is move/drag them up one level, so they're directly in Local Folders rather than nested within the extra OE Import folder. Then delete the Import folder once it's emptied.

Before doing this I wanted to check the OE Import folder didn't have any special or unusual status within Thunderbird, bearing in mind they're older messages that (a) didn't originate in TBird and (b) used to be in a different format in OE. I wondered if the fact that TBird created it there in the first place, and put all my storage folders inside it, was particularly important or significant now (post-import) for some reason, maybe in the way it handles the older messages stored inside, how it's able to find them or something like that?

Bottom line concern: will anything adversely affect the stored messages if these folders are dragged to another location? I'd hate to forego ready access, be unable to read anything, move them around, search/find, print etc.

I wouldn't want to risk losing any of it obviously, but one particular chunk of folders/messages is very important as it relates to a business and MUST be retained and safely stored for several years (all the Thunderbird mail is backed up), but there's a lot of it in a whole series of many storage folders + sub-folders + sub-sub-folders and so on, per subject, person or whatever. Too many and too much to easily check it was all still usable, beyond picking on and testing some random messages in a few folders here and there.

So before charging ahead with moving/dragging them to a new location in Local Folders, it would be good to be reassured there are no adverse consequences -- or indeed any consequences :))

(3) Only checking something briefly with this one. I'm not sure archiving messages is something I really need Thunderbird to do, given I already move most messages out of Inbox and Sent to the filing/storage folders. If I don't want Thunderbird automatically archiving messages, would I only need to untick the checkbox for "Keep message archives in..." in the Copies & Folders section for each account? It would then leave me to continue dealing with everything manually without TBird deciding at some point it would move a chunk of messages somewhere else, yes?

Thank you so much.

An unusual thing has happened yesterday (5 March 2016) to me after sending several short messages, each to 2 or 3 recipients. Each message contained an URL (http://www.money.pl/500zl/warszawa/), which belongs to a trusted Polish company. Probably, because of the phrase "money.pl" contained in the message body, Google/Gmail rejected all my messages. Then, I tried to resend all of the messages. The outcome was the same. Finally, I modified each message by removing the URL from the message body and then I sent my modified messages to all intended recipients successfully. However, after that, when I wanted to send some other messages to several people (including myself), all the messages were not sent and Google/Gmail displayed the following error message: "An Outgoing server (SMTP) error occurred while sending mail. The server responded: 5.4.5 Daily user sending quota exceeded. v140sm1406383Ifd.24 - gsmtp."

I have never before seen such an error message on my (the same) computer and am totally surprised how come the above situation occurred.

I contacted my local ISP and he confirmed that there was nothing to be blamed on him. He suggested that I write to Google support but, as you know, this is not straightforward and easy. However, I did submit the description of my brand-new problem in an online form available at https://support.google.com/mail/answer/22839?hl=en. Nothing, so far, has changed and no response from Google has been received (I provided my two e-mail addresses).

Can anybody experienced enough clarify this unusual irritating problem and suggest how to restore the normalcy to my Gmail free private account. Because of the above-described mishap, I had to use Windows Live Mail and my Yahoo! account to retain the continuity of my replying and sending new messages using my local e-mail client (Thunderbird 38.6.0) that connects to my Gmail account. I'm now even not allowed to send e-mails directly from my online Gmail account. I would also welcome a solid explanation as to what actually happened yesterday to my Gmail account and why. I wish to reiterate: nothing like this has ever before happened to my Gmail account. FYI, I use a desktop PC with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit OEM with all latest updates to both the O/S and numerous protection applications installed.

I have Thunderbird (38.5.1) set up on a desktop and a laptop machine. Both machines are running Windows 10 and I have 7 Virginmedia email accounts on the system. I can receive and send emails normally on the laptop but neither send or receive on the desktop (since 1st Feb). The email settings are identical on both machines. This problem is just related to the desktop machine

I have tried deleting the email passwords from the desktop machine's copy of Thunderbird but Thunderbird does not ask me for a new password: it just says it is retrieving messages and stops or says it cannot send a message ('The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.ntlworld.com timed out.')

I have no idea what to try next...
