Suddenly can't SEND Spectrum email, but can GET mail

I'm about the 100th person to have this problem, so I have spent the better part of two days looking at all the threads and possible fixes. Like all the others, with no warning, my TBird stopped being able to send messages through Spectrum. It did NOT start immediately after I updated TBird to 115.9.0 (in March) but just three days ago. I have three roadrunner addresses in TBird, and one other one associated with a website I have. All have the same problem. My phone and my iPad send messages just fine.

I tried all the fixes that worked for some. They didn't work for me; I continued to get various, inconsistent Send Message Errors. I have come back to the recommended Spectrum setup for the outgoing SMTP server: mail.twc.com, Security is STARTTLS, Port 587, Authentication is Normal Password, my username is my email address. Of course the problem is not fixed.

What DID work was putting TBird in Troubleshooting mode, using the Spectrum setup above. While that is adequate, I would much rather find out what is wrong. I have Matt's 10/7/23 11:56 AM answer to someone, asking for the Troubleshooting Information. I will be glad to supply that but I need an answer to this message in order to do that. Thanks! Demaris

I didn't install any add-ons. Everything is out of the box. Reinstallation didn't help. What is the problem and what should I do?

I want to set unthreaded as default column view for all folders, and then that column view to be used on all new subfolders I create, but without having to use advanced settings various workarounds (it is and should be called for what it is...) which is currently the standard response when users is asking how to change from threaded to unthreaded column view. Why can't this setting be simply implemented as part of the standard gui?

Should I delete thunderbird and then install a 2020 version where this was not a problem or is there a way to solve the problem with the latest current version

Yesterday I downloaded Thunderbird to Windows 10 (64-bit), added my Office 365 (for work or school) account, rocketmail account and iCloud account. I created unified folders for the three accounts. I have downloaded the TBSync add-on with the required CavDev (?) one to connect my iCloud calendar.

After successful use the first few times, now Thunderbird becomes unresponsive within 5 seconds of opening, every time, rendering the program unusable.

Troubleshooting mode does not fix the problem, so I assume it's not the add-ons, nor does starting my PC in Safe Mode (F4 at startup ie no networking), so I assume it's not antivirus.

I uninstalled Thunderbird and re-installed from the website today. All my accounts were there (so I wonder if the uninstall didn't work properly, although I assume that it's just the files left on my computer that the new Thunderbird installation is accessing).

All these attempted fixes leave the problem unchanged: the window freezing within seconds of opening.

Because the program becomes listed as 'not responding' and greys out on further clicks, I have to hard-close the program using Windows, selecting 'Close the progam'. Clicking 'Wait for the program to respond' leaves the screen greyed out, and nothing changes for at least 20 minutes (the maximum I've tried waiting it out). This also means that it does not yield a formal crash report, because Thunderbird does not recognise it has crashed.

On one occasion it did create a crash report, which I submitted. I am not sure what behaviour allowed this to happen, and I have been unable to reproduce it. That particular crash ID was as follows:

Any help much appreciated! I'd love to stick with Thunderbird if possible.

I normally open messages in tabs under exactly one circumstance: when I right-click on a message and explicitly open it in a tab.

I've found that (until I changed the handling of PDFs to "Save file") any PDFs that opened using Thunderbird's preview function would reopen if I closed and relaunched Thunderbird. This is not desired behavior.

I will also note that if I open Settings, it opens in a tab, rather than a separate window. This is neither expected nor desired (and my natural reaction is to click the close button on the window, closing Thunderbird, because "Settings" is something I expect to be in a window, not a tab. And that, too, reopens if I reopen Thunderbird.

And worst of all, those tabs that shouldn't be reopening at all are reopening in front of the main tab.

There was an extension called "Thunderbird-DontRestoreTabs," that would do exactly what I want, but that was made obsolete when the underlying extension technology was deprecated, so it is of no use in 115.9.0.

Thunderbird runs slow...ie when I type an email I can easily type faster than thunderbird will accept characters....(this does not happen in other applications)...this happened about a month ago, and then stopped ( I have no idea why)...but the problem is back. I am running Ver 115.10.0 build 2024012173147. Rebooting windows 11 makes no difference.... I just tried to enter Troubleshoot mode and thunderbird stopped responding....Top line says Mozilla Thunderbird (Not Responding). Thunderbird is connected to my gmail account. ...and I run IMAP....with 'store all messages on the computer', but thunderbird wants to load every email from the server'

I have contributed money, now I will contribute some sound advice. You see, there is one thing missing from your helpdesk and avenues for contribution: The option to contribute MEANING and PURPOSE. My contribution is to tell you KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid. This is a timely contribution. With every new Thunderbird version come more bells and whistles, most if not all of which are not useful, or only useful to a few. I admonish you instead to take a closer look at the programs' foundation. Several basic issues are still not working, or addressed. For instance, the annoying fact that drafts are not purged from the draft folder when sent. Or that headers/content are more and more frequently garbled when my inbox grow. And it is harder and harder to find the "repair" button. Or that I manually have to undo "sort by threaded" every single time I want to view an email from a particular sender. Or the fact that the main page of Thunderbird has to be called up from the taskbar every time I want to view it - the main window disappears between viewings, even though individual drafts or emails remain open. Or that the advanced search function - which used to be easy to find - now is hidden inside another menu, non-intuitively. There are too many options for keeping good things as they are, and NOT trying to change things all the time. This is hard for young, eager programmers to understand, but if this fact is not appreciated Thunderbird will grow less and less interesting and useful. Remember KISS, and read up on Occams' razor. For a few weeks I have had a new problem on my new Windows 11 Lenovo laptop, and also on my wife's older Dell laptop. We have been using Thunderbird for years without major problems. I loaded the latest version of Thunderbird on my new laptop and it seemed to work ok at first. Now I have a problem with intermittent failure to send normal emails on Thunderbird. My wife has noticed the same problem on her laptop Windows 11. I asked iPrimus support (who are supposed to support Hotkey) but they say it is not their problem but Thunderbird's. We RECEIVE emails ok, and sometimes pressing SEND will work immediately, sometimes on the second press, and sometimes not at all. This generates a message "-- Unable to authenticate Outgoing Server (SMTP), smtp.hotkey.net.au -- Check password and verify authentification method in Account settings/Outgoing server SMTP" We both use Trend virus protection.

I have had a few emails that did not show up in the inbox listing, so the message count at the top indicated more messages than were listed. Doing a search showed them, and by moving them from the search results to another folder, and then re-searching and moving them back, caused most of them to appear. But not all - I still have a message count of 20, but only 19 listed, see photo 1. Photo 2 shows the hidden email (from Barry Chandler). So the email is there, it's just not visible!

After the latest update, Thunderbird does not open. On line instructions say to erase some programs in it's file location. Did that, and the program booted. However, today, it will not open again. Can you fix this issue with another release, or should I try to go back to the previous release? If so, how to go back to the previous release without losing all my set up?
