Scenario: I have two E-Mails configured in thunderbird. For simplicity, let's assume they are: `alice@gmail.com` and `bob@cock.li` .

I have configured both via SMTP, and they are *totally different* SMTP servers (Gmail vs. cock.li)

If I compose a message from "alice@gmail.com" to "bob@cock.li", then when I reply from Bob's inbox in Thunderbird, everything is OK.

However, if I compose a message from "alice@gmail.com" to "bob.extra@cock.li", using the `.` alias feature of cock.li, then although Bob gets the message in his inbox, clicking "Reply" will actually set "From" as "alice@gmail.com" and "To" as "bob.extra@cock.li" !

To be very clear: this happens when clicking reply in Bob's inbox in Thunderbird.

I think this is a Thunderbird issue because:

  • It happens even if I compose the E-Mail from Alice's webmail (i.e. Browser) (Note: Alice still exists in Thunderbird)
  • It DOES NOT happen if Alice DOES NOT exist in Thunderbird
  • It DOES NOT happen if I try and reply as Bob via cock.li's webmail (i.e. Browser)

My guess is somehow when Thunderbird sees both Alice and Bob as valid accounts in Thunderbird, but the recipient was an aliased version of Bob, it somehow gets confused.

Here are example received headers for an actual demo I tried. (poiasd@saxrag.com is main E-Mail, abuse@saxrag.com is an alias. poiasdpoiasd@cock.li is the sender)

I've had long conversations with Apple regarding the setup of iCloud email accounts on Thunderbird. The process must include the generation of an App Specific Password using Apples web page :

https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage

This generates a password in the form aaaa-bbbb-cccc-dddd which is a different password to be used only with one Windows APP. Apple insists this is working with their standard mail server settings preset by all the email client providers. I've been advised to refer to Mozilla Thunderbird and Apple are insistent they can do no more than mail me links to all the instructions I've already read in detail several times. However, I believe the problem lies with Apple but they don't yet know it. I've used separate ASP generated passwords and tried to install an iCloud email on several different email clients: Thunderbird, Mailbird, Outlook and Postbox. All these confirm that the settings seem to be valid but nonetheless the email account fails to load with error messages suggesting the configuration or password (i.e. the ASP) is wrong. The common factor is Apple not Thunderbird. I suggest anyone flummoxed by this awaits the acceptance of this problem by Apple.

Cox Communications recently discontinued its e-mail services but provided a simple, direct transfer path to Yahoo Mail. The transfer retained the '@cox.net' referent in the e-mail address -- e.g., 'myusername@cox.net' -- to make the transition to Yahoo Mail seamless for all correspondence. The new Yahoo Mail username also now includes the '@cox.net' referent -- e.g., the former 'myusername' under Cox is now 'myusername@cox.net' under Yahoo. The transfer was successful, and e-mail send & receive functions for all of my old Cox accounts now work on the Yahoo Mail servers -- but ONLY in Yahoo's webmail.

in order to get Thunderbird to recognize my existing accounts under the new Yahoo regime, I went to 'Set Up Another Account > Email' and entered the required information, as illustrated in the attached screenshots. (See attachments 01 & 02.) The Set Up procedure initially found the old Cox server settings, apparently from Mozilla's archived data for the account. I Then performed a manual configuration, and, as indicated in the attached screenshots, the Set Up procedure also successfully found the new Yahoo Mail servers. Success, right?

Wrong! When I restarted Thunderbird, the new Yahoo Mail server settings were in place, but the username had not been updated -- it lacked the '@cox.net' suffix. After manually amending the username and again restarting, the new server settings and amended username were in place, but connection to the Yahoo servers failed repeatedly. (See attachment 03.) A second round of the 'Set Up Another Account > Email' procedure revealed that the archival Mozilla data had not been updated -- it still pointed to the old cox.net settings -- and a second manual configuration led to the same results as the first: Thunderbird failed to connect to my account on the Yahoo Mail servers.

I then looked for a way to completely remove the existing account from Thunderbird, and then to create a new account from scratch for the existing account on Yahoo Mail. I consulted Thunderbird online support advice [ref. 'Close My Account - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1395523 ]:

"If you created a mail account in Thunderbird for a particular email address to download emails from server then you can easily remove it ( Menu icon > Account Settings -- Select name of account in Left Pane -- Click on 'Account Actions' -- Select :'Remove Account'. -- Restart Thunderbird. ),"

However, I could find no 'Remove Account' selection anywhere in the version of Thunderbird that I am using (ver. 115.9.0 - 64-bit)!

Please explain what I must do:

   1. to make an existing Thunderbird account originally set up for an old '@cox.net' address hosted on Cox servers now connect to a new '@cox.net' address hosted on Yahoo Mail servers;

or, alternatively,

   2. to remove all traces of an existing Thunderbird account originally set up for an old '@cox.net' address once hosted on Cox servers, and then to set up a new Thunderbird account for the same '@cox.net' address now hosted on Yahoo Mail servers.

I have Thunderbird, version, 115.6 on my iMac. Up until this morning I have had no problems.

First when I used "Get Messages" this morning it kept telling me there was an error with my server. But after the error was fixed by contacting the server, Thunderbird was no longer able to connect to the server any more. I can send messages ok and they go through but I can't receive them since "Get Messages" no longer works.

My Apple Mail program on my laptop works fine, so the server is back to working properly and I can pick my Thunderbird sent messages there.

How can I get Thunderbird to connect to my server again for incoming messages?

Thank you, Martha

Several of my message filters do not run automatically. The "Filter Log" shows only one of the 49 active filters running. That one filter does not run with predictable results.

I am receiving 10-20 inbound messages per day that may well contain malware or spam. These each have a "ReturnPath" of "<>" and an "AuthenticationResults" that contains the string "dkim=none".

I am attempting to somehow identify and discard inbound messages whose "ReturnPath" is "<>" and whose "AuthenticationResults" contains the string "dkim=none".

I've made several different attempts using several different filter instances. Each works as expected when run manually from the pane that appears in response to tools->"Message Filters". Each of these invocations appears in the "Filter Log" when run manually

I see no evidence that any run automatically, even though I have clicked the checkbox to turn them on. I've tried setting the "Getting New Mail" dropdown to both "Filter before Junk Classification" and "Filter after Junk Classification" with no apparent difference in behavior.

I've tried turning on the "Periodically, every 10 minutes" option with no visible impact.

Many or most of my rules apparently work fine, because each moves a specific message from my inbox to a designated folder. Those moves all happen -- and yet the "Filter Log" shows no record of any of them.

I am running Thunderbird 115.9.0 (32-bit) on a Windows 10 Pro system. I'm a senior developer with more than four decades of professional development experience. I'm very familiar with rule systems.

My email provider is Rackspace, and their technical support is not responsive. This volume of spam/malware is making my email client unusable.

I am eager to pay a monthly support fee -- either directly or through any of the many online payment options such as "buy me a coffee" and such -- in exchange for effective technical support. I have been unable to find any such providers for Thunderbird.

I understand that this is a community of volunteers and I appreciate your attention. I invite any suggestions for workarounds or fixes.

Hi. I have used Thunderbird for a long time. I have never had a problem accessing my hotmail account for emails. Overnight Thunderbird now posts error message boxes when trying to login to the hotmail server. It reports incorrect username or password. Neither has been changed by me and comparison with Eset Password Manager shows them to be correct. I can login to Outlook online using the same login credentials an get my emails that way. I have also changed my Outlook hotmail password while logged in in my browser and updated everything on the PC to match of course.

I have massaged the server Settings for hotmail and have had the system working again, for a while. Twice I have reset the settings to a different server and back again and that seems to clear the problem for a while. Then the error messages switch on again consistently. At this moment using "File" -> "Get New Messages For:" -> "Hotmail" works without any problem and the automatic scheduled checking reports "No messages to download" so it appears to be working. But that is after just coming back to my PC to find a string of failed attempts, each with its own error box, which have appeared since I last "fixed" the problem and assumed it was now fine.

My server settings are Type: POP; Name: pop-mail.outlook.com; Port: 995; Username: same as for browser access (which works); Password: As in Thunderbird's stored passwords matching Password Manager and working browser access.

In my paranoia I have even wondered if I am being locked out by Microsoft somehow. Can anyone suggest what is going on here?

I have Thunderbird 115.9.0 64 bit on the 2nd latest version of Ubuntu Linux and by second latest I mean it is still supported even though there is a new version available. Several months ago there was a password problem with my internet account preventing me from logging into my internet/email service and all my devices could not send or recieve emails. I changed my password on my cell, my Windows 10 computers and they worked fine. My Thunderbird on my Ubuntu on the other hand rejected my password and I also checked all of my port and server settings with the help of my internet service provider tech support including comparing settings from other email clients. Still no password being accepted. My internet/email service provider tech agent suggested removing my account from my client and reentering it and this worked.

Several months later I changed my main email passwords again on incoming mail and outgoing mail servers on my account, verified my port settings are correct, which they were including the type of security and protocols used. When I select the desktop icon I get prompted to enter my main password and hit enter and the window keeps reoccurring as if it has rejected my password. I select cancel allowing me to enter and again clear and reenter password and again it is rejected. I removed my account (I think) and go through the motions of reinstalling my account and get a pop-up indicating the server already exists which puzzles me. Ports, security settings, password are all correct and tested on other devices. I can even use a browser and log onto my internet service providers server and access my account and my password works but not on my Thunderbird. Should I consider uninstalling and then reinstalling my Thunderbird on my Ubuntu? I think by mistake I deleted all of my emails BUT I have selected IMAP so my emails I want are still on my service providers server. IF I uninstall and reinstall how do I save my contact list. This I Inoticed is still intact. Suggestions please?
