(TLDR; Questions in bold at the bottom)

I currently have just a desktop Mac. I recently switched from Apple Mail to Thunderbird to read three email accounts: iCloud, gmail & a university account. I had previously used rules at the server level on my iCloud account, and this caused hella pain during the migration, including some zombie rules that I think I have isolated to Thunderbird. I deleted the rules from iCloud, removed the iCloud account from Thunderbird, restarted and then re-added it to Thunderbird. So far, so good, although I had to resubscribe to the draft, junk and trash folders (all other than the inbox) for some reason.

I have decided to experiment with not using rules or folders at all, and instead use local saved searches in Thunderbird. This will make my life easier when I get a laptop, which is inevitable. Two machines reading the same IMAP emails with rules can get weird.

Can I copy/paste existing saved search folders, so I can do similar searches just by making minor changes to the search terms? If so, how?

Can I copy/paste or save saved search folders, so I can do the same searches on a different Mac, without painstakingly recreating all the search terms? If so, how?

Can I create a saved search folder that contains all the messages not found in any OTHER saved search folder? If so, how?

Deleting emails in Thuderbird in Outlook email account does not delete them in Outlook

Hello. I have my outlook.com account set up in Thunderbird 115.10.1. When I delete emails in Thunderbird from my inbox, they disappear and they go to the Deleted folder in Thunderbird as they should, but they aren't deleted on the Outlook server. I can still see them in my inbox if I use my Outlook app on my phone. I must delete them using my phone.

If I delete an email on my Outlook app on my phone, they disappear immediately in Thunderbird, which is correct. In other words, it works correctly if I delete from my phone, but not from Thunderbird.

My server settings are: Server Type: IMAP Mail Server Server Name: outlook.office365.com Port: 993 Connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication method: OAuth2 When I delete a message: Move it to this folder: Deleted on <myaccount>@outlook.com

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Impossible to stop Thunderbird compacting folders it hasn't seen before?

Hi,

About a month ago I accidentally activated the "Delete all but the most recent 2000 messages" option for one of my mail account in Thunderbird (15.10.1 (64-bit) on a MacBook Air). Luckily our local support were able to restore the affected folders. BUT - every time I opened the restored folders in Thunderbird, all the restored messages would disappear again. Correspondingly, the support team can see at this time large numbers of messages being deleted.

I've tried to delete the affected mail account from Thunderbird - didn't help. I've hidden my profile and started Thunderbird from scratch, set up the mail account again (so there should have been no leftover information from any previous instance of the account) - didn't help. I can see that whenever I open a folder for the first time, Thunderbird says "Compacting" - this is even though I have "Always ask before compacting" set. Even after I turn off automatic compacting for space saving >20MB, Thunderbird still compacts when it first sees a folder.

I have verified this behaviour by connecting to the same mail server using alpine - I see messages flagged for deletion in the restored folder; as soon as Thunderbird touches the folder, they disappear (even though no compacting should be happening and I should be prompted before it does, see above). Conversely, if I remove the "to delete" mark from the messages using alpine and then open a folder in Thunderbird, the messages are visible there.

From my understanding of what Thunderbird should be doing when compacting (or rather when not compacting), I would say the behaviours I've seen are rather significant bugs. But if I've misunderstood and there is some other way to stop Thunderbird from purging messages marked for deletion, I would be grateful for any advice.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

hi all guys ... I'm experiencing several issues with oauth2 authentication, and I never had any issue before February the 2024 ... at the beginning the only account I have was not working was a microsoft account, so I thought it was "because of microsoft restriction"

but now, little by little, all my accounts requiring oauth2 authentication are failing, and I don't know were to check ...

I do NOT have any httpd/apache server running on localhost

I already tried changing things like general.useragent.compatMode.firefox or network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https

I also created another blank profile ... but again ... not way to make it works ...

cookies are permitted ... javascript is enabled ...

the result is always the same ... a blank page when I try to do any oauth2 authentication ...

if I manually copy/paste that link in Firefox/Chrome it perfectly works, so it's not a network connection issue ...

from what I can understand, it seems to be related to the "built-in browser" in thunderbird, that for some reason does not work "as expected" ... If I try to click on any link for example in the settings page

like the "learn more" link of this option Send web sites a “Do Not Track” signal that you don’t want to be tracked "learn more" thunderbird does NOT show anything ...

something is broken, and I can NOT understand what it is ...

is there anyone with some good advices?

please let me know

thanks in advance

Stefano

Last week, sometime, I received ALL the emails, that have come into my "mailbox", from about the time I purchased my latest computer, several years ago. There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of the little critters. All arranged alphabetically, starting with the letter "a". So far, the ONLY solution I've found from "Thunderbird Help", is to 1. Open inbox 2. Select [left click] one of the repeated emails. 3. This high lights the email in BLUE. 4. Select BOTH "CONTROL & A" KEYS at the same time. 5. This highlights the WHOLE PRESENT page of emails in BLUE. 6. The instructions then say to press the "DELETE" key. 7. Question is- IF I PRESS THE "DELETE" key, will that just delete the emails on this page, OR delete EVERY email in my entire "inbox"? The only OTHER remedy I've tried, is to send the unwanted emails, ONE at a time, to the "TRASH" folder, then empty the "TRASH" folder, when I get 10-15 emails in it. That could take a VERY long time. Awaiting your suggestion[s]-Joel Payne P.S. Might this happen again? If so, it may be time to go back to Carrier Pigeons.

I have latest Thunderbird version (115.9.0 64bit) on fully patched Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS.

I'm trying to get it to display Day-of-Week for old messages - is this possible? I have tried all sorts of combination as detailed HERE to no avail.

I'd like concise instructions on how to do this (if it can be done). I do not believe trying a new profile will work as I need to test this for old messages - at least for messages older than a week.

From the link above, I can the Day-of-Week to work for the current week - but that only displays the day and time. What I'm after is as shown in the attached Outlook screenshot. Also see the closest I can get that to match in the Thunderbird screenshot.
