There are 2 processes involved in Firefox Sync, and 0 differentiation between them in the language used to describe what Firefox Sync does in any of the documentation, this makes nearly every discussion on the topic highly confusing to borderline misleading.

When you press Sync, you are pushing settings to Firefox servers. When you sign in to Sync, you are pulling settings from Firefox servers.

Both of these steps are referred to interchangeably as "syncing" and there is next to no documentation of what causes each to occur nor what they actually do.

Why is this dangerous you might ask? Well, let's say I buy a new computer, I want to set it up the same way I use all my devices, so I sign in to sync to synchronize my settings, makes perfect sense. Nothing tells me anything is happening when I sign in, so I click the sync button because I want to synchronize my settings with my other devices. Big mistake. I've just overwritten the server-side sync profile with a default Firefox profile. You know how you fix that? You sign in and press the sync button to overwrite the sync profile again. But you know what happens when you sign in? You become synced with the now blank sync profile and lose all the settings that you want to be pushing to the sync profile. This just happened to me. Thankfully I was only choosing to sync add-ons and options AT THE TIME and I have backups that are about 6 months old and I rarely change settings, but some things like my homepage URLs are something that I do change fairly often, and I'm sure some additional sites were whitelisted since by default I just reject all cookies. I also thankfully use policies.json to block updates so I didn't immediately get assaulted by that too.

SO! I HIGHLY suggest that when merely signing in to Sync, the default should be for syncing to be off to start off with, so that you can choose what to "sync" BEFORE it occurs. However, because of the language, the question arises, what am I choosing to sync for? Am I choosing what to PULL from servers? Or am I choosing what gets PUSHED to the servers? When syncing is turned on, does that mean I an pulling the settings that I have chosen? Or am I am pulling ALL settings while only pushing what I have chosen IF I click the Sync button? Or do I push EVERYTHING?

It's incredibly unclear how the Sync feature works and both of the "main" articles on it are completely useless for understanding it because the term "sync" is used interchangeably for pushing or pulling settings.

What are the correct steps to rectify this horrid situation? Sign-in, set-up sync, choose "Options" and "Add-Ons" again, THEN copy over the backup settings, THEN Sync them to the "cloud"? If I have 2 different devices setup with sync, and 1 chooses to sync options and the other chooses to sync bookmarks, then I click sync on BOTH devices repeatedly, what occurs?

I want to sync my desktop and mobile login lists. I have Firefox 95.2.0 (2012-12-16) on my phone. And I have 95.0.2 on my desktop. Everything on mobile marked to synchronize. I've even manually clicked "sync"... Phone says everything was uploaded. But nothing is in the list on the desktop. When I tries to add a "new device" in preferences on desktop, I expect it to give me QR code. But it gives me instantly "Synchronization failed" instead. I'm tired to open list on phone and then type everything in on desktop. How can I fix the issue?

I have ongoing Adblock Plus and Ghostery, but since the latest update to Firefox 95, I have seen a significant increase in the numbers of Ads on internet news sites (TheGatewayPundit.com, ZeroHedge.com, etc.). I've have also experienced for the first time, a request to sign up in order to continue to view something (Fox News; Political Cartoons). Is this a result of the Firefox update or have the advertisements managed to overcome Ad blocking software? Is there a fix that you can suggest? Thank you for taking the time to read and respond. firefox search results have changed when i query for "news"; everyday i search for news by simply entering the word news into the browser. The results always were preceded by a scroll able header that had a picture relevant to article and story and the underneath was a list of news sites ( like CBC, CNN, MSNBC, etc)... now when i type in my query ( the word "news") the results displayed still list all the news sites but the header with pictures and story has disappeared - can anyone help?

I'm using v56.0.2 as it was the last before Mozilla took away the extensions that I depend on. Up until recently, it's worked flawlessly on Facebook. Now, within the last week or so, I can no longer type in the comments box on someone else's post. The cursor is there and flashing but when I type, the cursor only flickers but no text. Other browsers don't have this issue so I'm confident that it's nothing to do with my FB profile. Typing in the search box or creating a new post works fine. I just can't type comments.

I use Firefox for Facebook game called Family Farm. My neighbors will not load and a few other glitches. I know it is Firefox because I had to download Chrome and played on it. Chrome loads my neighbors on Facebook. Also for some reason Firefox is hogging my memory then crashing. It takes a while to crash but still should not be happening. I cleared cache and optimized and everything to maintenance my computer. Any help appreciated.

Hello I have seen the recent changes to the toolbar screenshot functionalities, the ":screenshot" developer console command, and the command line headless option.

Concerning latest Firefox 95 I wonder if it was possible to call any of these functionalities from an addOn (popup menu), providing parameters as in command line (fullpage, visible), and the folder. I am developing my first addon to customize firefox to my needs.

About 4 months ago I started having a problem of not being able to enter the online banking site. I have tried every time there was a software update, but no luck. I have tried every solution that I could fine, but still no luck.

After entering my login info and pressing enter the next page displays the following error messages. 404 Page not found and ssl_error_bad_mac_alert or ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap

This problem is occurring to many people. So I have had to use Edge to do my online banking only. Even then when I log out using Edge, I occasionally I get the following error ssl_error_bad_mac_alert As firefox is my preferred browser I sure would like this resolved.

As of yesterday my screen has gone black. Not on all sites, my homepage is a UK news site and that`s OK but my email is all black, when I try to search for a new sight the google page is black. Some sites come up black and some white. Sometimes the site background is white but the drop-down box is black. I have tried disabling all add-ons it makes no difference. I have tried un-checking these boxes: "Use recommended performance settings Learn more These settings are tailored to your computer’s hardware and operating system. Use hardware acceleration when available" I am demented and have tried fiddling about for a whole afternoon to try to sort this. I have had Firefox for years and have never had this problem. My version is 95.0 (64 bit)

I have a 2015 Dell alien using Microsoft 8 and have been very happy with it. Recently my PC had a problem and went into a "self repair mode". This has happened before with excellent results. This time some things are missing. Most noticeably all my Firefox stored passwords. I really depend on that wonderful service you created as I am in my 70s and cannot keep all those passwords straight.

My question, after all that, is can my passwords be retrieved? Does Firefox use a cloud to retrieve passwords in case of something like this? Please save me hours of work and worry.

How can I disable annoying updates reminder popping up again and again in latest Firefox versions?

I read a lot of questions like that and tips how to disable updates completely, but this is not what actually people wanted. All we need is just disable reminder and let user update manually, i.e. behavior similar to any other software including other browsers.

i opened firefox (v.95) and tried opening up my email and found that all my saved passwords were gone from firefox on my computer. it said i should crate a firefox account to get my logins back so i did and i still could not access any of my web logins. so i searched the help pages. opened up my profile n made a backup of my key3, key4, n loginjson files, downloaded v.91 firefox esr and copied my key3 file into a new profile.

so i still dont have my web logins ... n now i have an outdated version of firefox with none of my bookmarks either. im sick of troubleshooting n my wifi is almost out for the month.

how do i get my web logins and bookmarks back so i dont have to spend hundreds of hours recreating them?

Will the Firefox recovery key still work if my email address registered with Firefox changes? I don't see an answer to this anywhere yet I see this as very important.

I backed up my bokmarks on both PC and Mac as .json files due to switching laptops for my holiday (PC is personal, Mac is work). When I imported the personal .json file on the Mac, the bookmarks did get imported but all jumbled up - the folders were still there but empty and all the bookmarks were just dumped in random order in the Bookmarks Menu root folder. So I tried synchronising profiles instead which didn't work either.

Now I'm back home and of course the synch has messed up the bookmarks on my PC as well. I deleted everything, restored the bookmarks from the personal .json again, and it does restore them properly for about 2 seconds and then all of the neatly sorted bookmarks in their folders get overwritten again by the jumbled mess. The same thing happens when I restore from the automatic restore point instead (from a day before my holiday).

I have disconnected the snych, restarted and updated several times, and tried this on both PC and Mac with both the personal and work .json files, with the same result every time. I have about 1200 bookmarks in total so I would love to be able to fix this without going through all of them to put them back into their respective folders manually. Any idea how I can fix this?

Firefox have closed to all Feeback. I just wanted to tell them the reasons that after being loyal to Mozilla I think since 1995 I finally switched to Goggle Chrome next year. There newest version was just awful. Incredibly slow, glitchy one of the worst things and worst decisions was to get rid of Remind Fox and add on that I found unbelivably helpful and they just decided to discontinue it and there is nothing else like it other adds on just don't do the same stuff my son loved it too. And lastly there are addons to help hearing impaired users on Chrome and Firefox doesn't even have a single one. It is also just insanely slow to load now. The new version was a tremendous downgrade.
