I refer to the classic case where I have an SSD and don't want to "consume" it by watching endless videos on YouTube (and/or other sites) that are being buffered to the disk. Or does the buffering of such videos occur in RAM by default in Firefox?

I also want to speed up Firefox at the maximum.

What are the downsides of having the entire cache in RAM and, if none, why isn't the default instalation with no cache at all on the disk (browser.cache.disk.enable = false) ?

What is the best configuration of Firefox (regarding cache) on a laptop with the an SSD and 4 GB of RAM?

Thanks in advance.

For one of the client we are experiencing slow browsing issue with Firefox (Firefox 60.7.2esr) .We tried without any customization but it has the same slow browsing experience. However there is one observation though if we use explicit ip address instead .pac in proxy then browsing speed is fine. Our proxy team hasn’t found anything abnormal with proxy configuration and pac file size is also small in kbs.

It is getting to where FF doesn't load most pages correctly or at all, with or without plugins installed, and regardless of whether the cache is cleared or not. FF is extremely slow too, even after a fresh install. FF is also not sandboxed. I have no such problems with Chromium.

Tech folks are telling me FF is dying. I was hoping FF would beat Google because I hate Google. I'm finding myself using Chromium most of the time and I hate how its preferences and plugins are limited compared to FF and it doesn't load the home page I specify, instead loading a useless mess of preset links I don't approve. But I have to say I'm at the point of ditching FF completely, which is a disgusting feeling of defeat because now it seems Google dominates the PC browser and it's not even customization-rich and I don't even get to assign my home page to the home button.

If I had to give FF a grade, it would be F. It's like an old car that only goes 25mph and only drives on a rapidly decreasing number of roads where upon the instrumentation fails to light up or the engine might stop altogether. What kind of legacy is this? I'm tired of google maps not displaying correctly. Missing fields, maps, buttons, and graphics all the time. What's the deal? FF used to be great but now it's useless to me; I don't understand why it's still around. Are there plans to redo FF to address all these issues?

If pages would just load correctly I'd even tolerate slower program loading. Sandboxing would be a huge plus and I don't think it's that difficult to achieve. Much has been done to beautify the FF gui while its basic ability to display pages properly and securely is heavily neglected. May I ask where this is going? Give me reasons to stick with FF... Isn't FF worth fixing up?

Thanks, A user concerned about browser monopolies and diminished ability to browse the web productively and in alignment with my computing needs.

I had my usual "several" (probably 3 to 5) Firefox windows/tabs open ... and Microsoft decided to send an update to my Windows 7 box.

I observed Firefox memory use rise rapidly to nearly 800MB ... while netsvcs.exe did approximately the same thing. (This machine has 2GB of RAM.)

Fortunately I had Windows Performance Monitor running, and was able to determine that Windows Update was the competing activity ... and after-the-fact, determined that it had been installing an update to MS Security Essentials (basically a malware signature update - and I have the ID of the specific update, but since it is a security update, I'm hesitant to post that detail in a quasi-public forum). Usually, such updates install quickly and transparently. I also cannot tell, with confidence, whether the memory consumption was from the process of installing the signature - or the process of scanning for malware presence after the sig was installed (although I'd *guess* the latter). I believe both of those aspects execute within netsvcs.exe.

This happened over a period of approximately an hour, during which about all I could do was "sniff around" to identify the culprits; eventually I killed the Firefox process (hoping that its History feature would allow me to return to my open tabs... which was not quite true).

I have reported the event to Microsoft as well, as it could equally be their problem.

Suggestion: Add instrumentation to Firefox to capture data on sudden increases in RAM use - paying particular attention to outside-the-norm values, in relatively short time periods (minutes, not hours) that do not self-resolve ... and consider whether Firefox can be more aggressive at releasing memory it has "claimed," when things go bad.

(Perhaps collect high-level "physical memory available" data when things begin to "go bad," and capture the "footprint" of Firefox memory use... And perhaps add intelligence to log memory allocation failures somewhere. I don't know with certainty if the issue was fragmentation, or the sheer amount requested, but experience and grey-hair lead me to suspect the former. The only Firefox window/tab that I know might have been a high-memory-consumer was a moderate-sized Google Map covering an urban area of several dozen square miles, so it was a complex image.)

Not suggesting this is Firefox's "fault" -- clearly, both processes were "to blame" in the sense that they didn't handle the situation well... but Firefox might handle it better.

I've seen (and reported) quite a series of memory-utilization issues since 28.0 ... perhaps it's time for a "tiger team" to look into these.

AH - one other detail: I keep Firefox pinned to the Windows task bar, and when it starts, it asks me which profile I want to use (of about 5 choices). When restarting Firefox after identifying all the above... I found that it no longer asked me to choose a profile, and the profile it opened was clearly NOT my most-common profile, which includes (e.g.) all my most-common, site-specific login information. I had to mess around for several minutes to get this profile "back" up and running, and I did not make note of what I tried during that effort.

On Windows 10 and Firefox 58.0.2, when I click the menu button in the upper right (the three hamburger bars) or any other menu button (i.e. history), a ghost of the drop menu appears and Firefox hangs for at least a few seconds. Often times, it totally hangs and needs to be closed. I can browse and scroll and video stream works. I have tried the "it hangs" fixes and none work. Specifically I have tried the accessibility permission option, the disable hardware acceleration option, and trying a new alternative profile (full on reset). I have also tried uninstalling the 64bit version and installing the 32bit version. None of this has worked. The menu bar does work. Also when any popup from the menu button area (i.e. giving website location access) it is ghosted or black and locks Firefox.

When I have a video playing in the background (for example a Twitch stream) and use Firefox in a way that causes 100% CPU usage (for example navigating a Google Maps 360° view or scrolling a complex website excessively) I get interruptions and even repetitions of short bits of the playing sound. This issue started after updating to Firefox Quantum and is quite annoying. Is this a known issue? Any potential workarounds? I'm currently using 58.0.2 (64 bit) on Windows 10 16299.

Hi dear developers and people who help other people in this forum, I'm Kristian, an old user of Mozilla and since I have installed mozilla of quantum project on my laptop with windows 10, I have notice on the task manager that mozilla drains a lot of ram even with a few tabs open ( Let's say 7). Well my concern is because with Google Chrome (I know that is offensive to compare) I have open more than 30 tabs and its ram consumption is understanble to be higher, nevertheless is really close to mozilla ( Lets say 1GB of RAM). I tried to run mozilla on safe mode with no addons but I get the same result. I tried reduce the content process limit to 2 (4 by default) but again, the RAM consumption still high. I reinstall mozilla, but unfortunately nothing changes. Im the only one with this trouble? Any ideas of what it can be? The mozilla version what Im using is 60 x64 and windows 10 x64 Thanks in advance ps: I attach an image to prove what I wrote

Firstly, I want to say right away that the problem arose with the release of the 57th version, that is, Quantum. Until the 57th version everything was fine. And also I want to say that this problem does not exist in other browsers. The problem manifests itself in this case: If you open the site of the dns-shop.ru or technopoint.ru store and, without waiting for the page to fully load, click on any item on the page, for example, on the left, select the directory partition, then the whole browser hangs. In this case, the browser stops responding to any pressing in the interface and generally does not react to anything, except for the completion of the process in the task manager. That is, I open the task manager and find there a process of firefox that uses almost all the resources of the CPU. After that, I end the process and firefox starts to work and writes that the "tab has dropped" (image # 3) I noticed the same problem on other sites, in particular youtube, vk, fb. Also, with fast transitions between site pages or streaming video, the browser may hang and the CPU load immediately 90-100%. Tried it on a completely clean firefox, on a freshly installed one, it ran without add-ons. All the same. I have to use google chrome until it's fixed ...

Firefox has become completely unusable for me because it has become very slow. It was fine on this computer (newer i7, 32GB ram, ssd) last weekend but not this. It is actually happening on two different computers. It becomes impossible to type (echo is seconds and windows reports that the application is not responsive).

However sysinternals procexp doesn't report anything much unusual for the computer as whole or FF. Speed test shows that my internet connection is fine and Chrome is working normally

I have paired sync down to only bookmarks and add-ons of which there are only 5.

The problem may be due to sync - FF seems to perform normally in safe mode or before it has asked for the master password.

I have a beef with visibility around sync - it doesn't seem to be possible to see how often it is running, how much data it is sending, how many disk writes are happening.

I am submitting this report from Chrome because FF is unusable.

Hello, I recently moved to Firefox from another browser and I am very pleased with it. My usage is that my computer remains on 24/7 with the browser open. I saw a paragraph in the help docs:

"Firefox's memory usage may increase if it's left open for long periods of time. A workaround for this is to periodically restart Firefox."

However this can be inconvenient when you have several tabs open that are logged in to various sites for work, which also retain state which is not restored when the browser is restarted.

Over a few days the memory "leaking" (?) is mounting up significantly as per attached. In summary:

Pre close - system RAM usage 12.5GB Post close browser - system RAM usage 8.1GB (4.4GB drop!!) Re-open browser with same tabs - system RAM usage 8.7GB (actually 9.0GB after all tab views were accessed and put back into the state they were in before closed)

From this simple test I can see that 12.5GB - 9GB = 3.5GB was hogged by the browser and not actually required.

As a developer I am interested to understand the reason for this memory leaking. Is there anything I can do while the browser is open to free it up? Or cause it to not "leak" in the first place?

Thanks,

Andrew

First thing, why is there no "register button" on the forums, tell your UI guys this IS confusing, not might be confusing, you have to go through this question submission to register at the forums. Been on the Web since I started hosting a BBS in 1988, I should not be confused. I should be browsing the forums right now looking for the right thread to get some help in. Wonder where this will be posted? I don't know, because this is confusing.

As I'm typing this my characters are freezing ever 15 seconds or so. Is there something wrong with the current build? I've had crashing and "not responding" problems for the last month and a half. Have removed all plugins and Add-ons (not cool at all) and then re-installed, twice if you include today. You see, since the last update, which I thought might be a bug fix, Firefox is now using most all of my ram, usually about 3.2 GB of it, no matter if there is 4 tabs or 15 (which I would NORMALLY have in my browsing, so I no there was a point where Firefox had no problem with this). That sounds like a memory leak to me. My question is: Is there something wrong with Firefox right now? Seccurity Essentials and MBAM both say I"m virus and malware free, which would make 4 years of being virus and malware free, I make an effort to browse smart, so I'm pretty sure that's not it. I'm attaching a link to a Screenshot I put in my dropbox of the threads tabs of Process Explorer, what are all these threads? Why is firefox running all these Threads at once. Is this normal? I cannot use Firefox right now, is there something wrong on my end or your end?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/8jtofcfn0wfybor/FFThreadsOpen.JPG?dl=0

Thank you, Adam.

While playing FarmVille 2 foxfire keeps hanging - says at top "not responding". I can load game and play for a few minutes but then hangs. Sometimes it hangs right after loading. Will not come back so I have to quit foxfire. I have been having the problem in last several weeks but yesterday it got really bad. I usually only had to restart foxfire once to get it to work. I have tried refreshing foxfire. Also disabling hardware acceleration. My plugins are up to date. My computer is only 1.5 years old and I have windows 10. I can play FV2 on Google Chrome and MSN edge but both are slow and jerky. I really prefer foxfire over the other ones.
