I have set the Downloads preference to "Always ask you where to save files".

When I download a file (I usually download PDF files), Firefox presents the file picker dialog with some directory pre-selected.

I would expect Firefox to pre-select the directory where I saved my most recent file.

However, Firefox often switches between several of my recent directory, seemingly absolutely arbitrarily. It would present the most recent directory e.g. 5 times in a row then suddenly switch to some other directory on its own.

This is EXTREMELY annoying and bad, as it is easy to overlook the changed directory and save the file in an unintended directory. It happened several times to me.

This behavior so destructive and annoying that I would consider it a bug that should get fixed (other browsers do not do this!). However if it is for some strange reason considered to be a feature, how can it turned off and how can Firefox be made to ALWAYS present the most recent download directory?

I have my favorite applications set as defaults in the autoplay extensions options. I have "do this every time" checked in the dialog box that pops up every time I try to open a file. It doesn't matter what the file extension is. PDF, MP4, and JPG files don't automatically open.

I posted a similar question before when I thought this only applied to MP4 files. Since then, I've noticed it applies to all files.

I would really appreciate some help getting this to work again. Jim Birke

CPU's intermittently would rev high and cause shut down. I opened task manager processes and CPU usage was high in Firefox. I clicked on Firefox and seven other Firefox dropped down. Not sure what that meant but, I then opened programs and noticed two versions on my computer, 82.0 and 84.0. I uninstalled 82.0 and now everything is gone. I reinstalled 84,0,2 but, it is "watered down" from the version before the uninstall. Please let me know how I can recover Firefox to before the uninstall. I'm running Windows 10 Home.

Hello, I am just disappointed. My Firefox icon is missing from the Start menu and therefore from the taskbar when launching.

I tried to clear the icon cache (by deleting iconcache* in "C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer"), Reinstall firefox, delete %APPDATA% and %LOCALAPPDATA% firefox folders, but nothing changes.

Any clue? I don't have any idea.

PS: It's only for my profile. I just don't want to delprof, I have tons of apps with settings, etc

scuz my english.

I've been having trouble for a couple of months with Firefox. It's on both my desktop and my laptop with both Firefox and Firefox Developer. It seems to happen at random, but instead of being able to see words, all I can see is symbols like these (attached). If I copy/paste it into a word doc or a text file, I can read it just fine. It's only in the browser that I experience these issues.

Has anyone else had these issues? Is there an easy fix that I'm just not seeing?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Hello,

I have some trouble adding an e-mail address to the monitor service. It seems that the e-mail bounce back. My e-mail provider is asking me if I can provided them with the e-mail sent by firefox, and the received answer, so they could check what is causing it. How could I get those information? Thank you in advance. Best regards, Cyril

# Ubuntu garbage data increases exponentially
## Intro and context

Hello. I am a power user that works in software and web development. I have been using Firefox on and on for most my life, but full time as my main browser since late 2018. One thing I love Firefox for is its lightness on memory compared to that of Google Chrome, and also its open web standards, open source, privacy, ethical owners, and customizations. I have been using Windows 10 up until July 9th 2020 before I switched to my first main Linux desktop. I have always kept my eye on CPU and RAM usage, as high CPU drains battery and running out of RAM results in a system crash. I actively keep many tabs open (less than 100 but more than 60) I ensure that they are light. I mostly have GitHub tabs open, but I keep a few other things open as well, mostly Wikipedia/wiktionary and duckduckgo tabs, a pcloud (file service) tab, but sometimes a youtube tab or two (rarely a reddit tab)

## Issue

I have been noting that garbage collection is getting exponentially worse over time. When I got my laptop, I was able to keep 2-3 fully packed profiles open at all times, and never having to close Firefox until shutdown (after about 12-16 hours uptime) I rely heavily on Firefox profiles for organization. It has been getting exponentially worse. Starting in late 2020, I had to reduce the max number of open profiles to 2, and in 2021. In early January, I had to start closing the profiles once a day to free up 2-3+ GiB of RAM (swap doesn't change much, that is the garbage data that isn't being cleared, it normally ends up at 800 MiB to 1.7 GiB by the end of the day) and now (as of January 22nd 2021) I have to close Firefox 2-3 times a day to prevent my system from getting overloaded, as Firefox eats through 1-2 gigabytes of RAM per hour, even when idle. I have noticed several processes titled `web content` that use 200-600 MiB each (there is usually 2-7 of them) I am wondering what I can do for Firefox to prevent high RAM usage. For reference, here is my main profile in idle mode:

Mozilla is refusing to let me upload images right now, so I will link them

https://github.com/seanpm2001/seanpm2001/blob/master/FFTechSupport/Jan22/MProfile1_Idle_1.22.2021.png

Here is my usual 2nd profile in idle mode:

https://github.com/seanpm2001/seanpm2001/blob/master/FFTechSupport/Jan22/MProfile2_Idle_1.22.2021.png

Here is the RAM and SWAP usage before my 2nd refresh today (uptime: 8 hours 46 minutes)

https://github.com/seanpm2001/seanpm2001/blob/master/FFTechSupport/Jan22/FF_GF_Open_1.22.2021.png

And here it is with Firefox and Nautilus closed (I forgot about nautilus before getting the first 2 pics, it uses a lot of memory depending on its usage):

https://github.com/seanpm2001/seanpm2001/blob/master/FFTechSupport/Jan22/FF_GF_Closed_1.22.2021.png

I have lately suspected that GitHub may have gotten heavier, or is sending too much data via AJAX methods, but I am not entirely sure.

    1. System specs

Device: `Dell XPS 13 9XXX`

Operating system: `Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa)`

Linux Kernel version: `5.4.0-48-generic`

Processor type: `Intel Core i5 10th generation`

Processor specs: `Intel® Core™ i5-1035G1 CPU @ 1.00GHz × 8`

Processor mode: `x64`

Desktop environment: `GNOME 3.36.1`

Windowing system: `X Desktop environment 11`

Memory: `7.4 GiB (8 GB)`

SWAP file: `2.0 GiB`

Firefox version: `84.0.1` - I haven't updated in a while due to fear of memory increase and instability

Number of Firefox profiles: `61` - no new profiles created since December 26th 2020

I am wondering what I should do about this. I work with hundreds of projects, so I can't close too many tabs, as it becomes hard to access and manage. I intend to close 16 tabs in the next month, as I am freeing up some projects.

I have no trouble switching the Mozilla folder to make things simple for my 64 bit win 7 install works like a charm. I also have a 32 bit win 7 on another drive that I would like to update with all my latest bookmarks and passwords. I would just save the Mozilla folder of that 32 bit drive and slide my 64 bit made Mozilla folder over to it. Would this work, I don't believe it could cause any harm if it don't work I can always just slide my 32 bit folder back in, I will have it saved of course just in case. I have in the past moved those other folders but this is different in that I cannot run both drives and systems at the same time,. I have them so I can chose my boot choice either in bios or using the F11 key to chose which would boot first. I haven't used the 32 bit for two years but I have a lot of tools I need to go back to and use for image work. I can select the Mozilla folders easily from either system and do the replacement so it isn't hard. I would rather like some input before I do this. Of course I am talking about my profile information but moving the entire Mozilla folder from one to the other, that is a working fix for making it easy on a new firefox install without any bookmarks or other information. Thanks
