Firefox does not exit process after closing window. I am using Firefox 27.0.1, and this problem began with Firefox 26. I am using the standalone Linux version, not specific to Fedora, Ubuntu, etc. I have restarted with add-ons disabled, and I have reset Firefox to its default state. The issue still occurred with both configurations. I can consistently produce this problem by logging in to Gmail and logging back out. Then I close Firefox, and the process remains. This has happened while visiting one or two other websites, but they are not websites I visit regularly, so I don't know what they were. Killing the process allows me to open Firefox again, but I don't want to kill the process every time I check email. Any help would be appreciated.

Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

You can also check for issues caused by extensions and plugins (plugins aren't affected by starting in Safe Mode).

I reset Firefox and disabled all extensions and plugins. I have also tried the File > Quit method to close Firefox, but the process still runs at 100% after quitting. In one case, it ran for over 30 minutes before I killed the process.

Is there any progress on this?

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems as a reset still can carry over some problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

There might be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

I deleted the old profile and created a new one. I also found the plugins that I couldn't uninstall through Firefox, and deleted them. I reset Firefox again just to be safe. Unfortunately, the process still doesn't close after I check my email. The only thing that shows up in the Add-ons Manager is the Default theme. All extensions, plugins, services, and other appearance settings are empty. Firefox does start a lot faster, but the problem remains. Any other suggestions?

I recently upgraded to Firefox 28, and the problem still exists. However, when Firefox hangs, the process now runs at 0% instead of 100% as before.

Firefox process does not shut off when I close Firefox. Many, many people have this problem. Mozilla - this is an important security breach - when will you fix it? I have FF 29.0.1 and this has been happening for some time. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/976517

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the issue may be caused by the clear history settings.

Press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar. Then Tools > Options > Privacy. The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

I still have the problem in Firefox 29.0.1. I changed the clear history settings as mentioned above, but it didn't make a difference.

Firefox 29.0.1 was issued as a chemspill update to fix this bug as it was reported in the initial 29 release but unfortunately, it doesn't work for everyone. It was tested (According to bug 1005487c#36)that this issue was fixed in Firefox 30b8. For those of you not wanting to wait for Firefox 30 release (will be released on the 10th of June), you can download the latest Firefox Beta and then upgrade to the release channel when Firefox 30 gets released by downloading the newest version at mozilla.org/firefox Note that Mozilla keeps a public website for release dates of all Firefox builds (Nightly, Aurora, Beta and Release)

Everyone

Anyone with this issue and the problem was only seen if History was cleared on closing, I would be interested to know if the New Beta 30b8 resolves the issue.

Note if you do install the Beta do NOT use any option to remove personal information or you will destroy bookmarks and passwords etc. If you install the Beta you may do that over the top of the ordinary Fx29.0.n Release. No need even to uninstall Fx29 first.

If you still have this problem either

  • Wait a couple of weeks for the Release to upgrade automatically fromFx29 toFx30
  • Try the Beta as already mentioned above by Moses.
  • Or start your own thread by asking your own question. Please follow the prompts to include full troubleshooting information. Use /questions/new

This is an old thread. You may not all even have the same problem.

I know this is your question. I am wondering if it may be an idea to start a new question on this. That at least updates the information.

You will be using Fx29.0.1 by now. Ask the question using

  • The new profile
  • And your latest Firefox version
  • With all addons except the troubleshooter one disabled.
  • Have Firefox set to remember History.
  • Follow the prompts to provide troubleshooting information again.

Post back in this thread once you have done so.

N.B. I use Ubuntu and have several Mozilla builds, Canonical, and the third party Palemoon fork; available for use. None of them hang on exit, or continue long after running afterwards, when I use them.

John99,

I am still having issues with Firefox 29.0.1 and the latest Beta build. I have started a new thread at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1004310
