When I open Firefox there is a box in the middle of the screen where I usually place items that I want to look up. Previously, if I put an item or name in this box and clicked it, numerous websites would appear. Now nothing happens. If I go to the address bar and put in a valid website address, nothing happens. However, the websites on my Bookmarks still function Please help. I also note that when I access the search engine box, there are no search engines listed. My wife is a Facebook person, and I don't know if this somehow has changed by Firefox settings.

hello, can you try to replicate this behaviour when you launch firefox in safe mode once? if not, maybe an addon is interfering here...

Forgive me, I am older and not a real computer person. How do I launch Firefox in a "Safe Mode?" Thanks for taking the time to help me.

You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe Mode:

  • On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
  • On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)

Thanks again for your help. I managed to start Firefox in the safe mode (no problem) even in that mode but it still will not let me query a subject or go to a website once the proper address is inserted. Got any other ideas.

Hi jobobmun, I am happy to hear that it started in safe mode, however safe mode does not necessarily block plugins. It is possible a virus might be

I am also surprised that your operating system works with Firefox System Requirements https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox.../system-requirements/ So horay for getting it to work!

Antivirus recommended for your computer's operating system if there is an issue: http://www.srnmicro.com/products/

But to no avail there is another test to see if it is a plug in by creating a clean profile. Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles

If you need help with this, we are happy to help.

You can check if you have the XML files of the default search engines including Google in the browser\searchplugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

If not then you need to reinstall Firefox. You may have to delete the Firefox program folder in case there are still issues with the search engines.

You can find the full version of the current Firefox 27.0 release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:
