I thought this thread would help: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/872247

I tried disabling greasemonkey. didn't help.

I tried creating a new profile and inadvertently lost my old one with all my saved history [very important to me], customizations, and bookmarks and had just a useless empty blank profile that still did not use middle click.

I deleted that profile and firefox would not load. I figured out how to cut some stuff out of the profiles.ini file [whew!] and at least got my old profile back but still no solution.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

FirefoxSafeMode

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Please report back soon.

Does the middle-click work otherwise?

Some toolbar buttons like the Refresh button and the entries in the Back and Forward drop-down list can be middle-clicked.

Does smooth scrolling work?

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General: Browsing: "Use smooth scrolling"

You can check the settings in the Mouse driver (Control Panel) and make sure that the mouse wheel button is set to the default action.

Does the middle click on your mouse work in other browsers/applications?

This was really the only place I used it. I don't even know what I'd use it for elsewhere.

the middle click works fine in Privacy mode. I checked on chrome and it's the same there!

What do you mean with "Privacy mode"?

Is that running Firefox in Private Browsing mode or something different?

yeah private browsing. the weird thing is I went to check my mouse settings to make sure the wheel was assigned as a button (it was) I clicked ok (instead of cancel) to close the window and now my mouse middle clicks properly in Firefox & Chrome
