Firefox no longer works properly. I tried the reset Firefox option, but that did not help. When I try to delete an email, I receive the not responding message. When I try to move an email into a folder I receive the message. When I try just to go to the next email, I receive the message. If I try to mark a message not spam, nothing happens. If I wait, eventually Firefox responds and I can move on to the next email. Obviously this is very time consuming and I find that I just don't read my email as I don't what to spend the time. I contact Yahoo and they responded back that it is a browser issue. Because Firefox is the only browser I have on my computer I need to get this working properly again. One more thing, sometime this non-responsive message shows up when I am using other sites, but just not as often as when I'm trying to read my Yahoo emails. I thank you in advance for answering my question and try to help me get this issue resolved.

Hello,

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

Waka_Flocka_Flame, I followed you instructions but I need to do further testing to be 100% sure that 90% of my issue has been resolved. The not spam icon still does now work and the links in an email that ends up in spam that is not really spam still do not work. I just move the email into my in box which resolves the link problem. But, I would like to be able to mark the item not spam. Yes, I do put the email address in my safe-list but that does not always keep them out of the spam folder.

If that doesnt work, disable the Norton addons

Name: Norton Toolbar Version: 2013.4.4.3 Enabled: true ID: {2D3F3651-74B9-4795-BDEC-6DA2F431CB62}

Disabling graphics hardware acceleration seems to have corrected the problem. Thank you Waka_Flocka_Flame

Hi, The problem has come back and now the browser actually stops loading in new pages when I click on a link in my Yahoo email. I have the latest version of Firefox and I checked and rechecked to make sure that the use hardware acceleration when available box is unchecked . This is a new computer and the graphics drivers are up to date. I do not believe that the Norton add on is the issue as I closed it and still have the same problems. I really don't want to disable it. Also, it seems to happen the most when I am using the Yahoo emails. I can read my Yahoo emails easily without any problems on my iPad, so I really do believe it is the Firefox browser that is causing the problem. Do you have anything additional I might try? Thank you for your help.

Hi, This issue has not be resolved. I even paid to have someone fix the computer so that the non-responsive issue would go away. Bottom line -- seems like Firefox does not play nicely with WIN8.1 and I was told to use . . . . . Internet Explorer, which does NOT have this issue. Please help at I don't want to change but I can no longer tolerate this constant non-response.

Krava,

3 things to do (actually 1, the other 2 are recommendations)

  1. Update your Flash player (it's at 11, current is 12) http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
  2. Update Firefox (it's at 25, we are on 28 with 29 scheduled to be released later this month)

I noticed that Waka had recommended to disable your Norton addons. Sometime toolbars can be problematic. You stated that you do not wish to disable and that you already closed it. Can you try to actually disable the Norton addon and see if it make a difference? Usually toolbars aren't used normally and just cause problems. What is the main reason you are using the Norton addons for? You don't have to keep the addons enabled to be protected. Norton AV is on your system and running in the back ground.

Thank you for answering Moses B. According to Firefox I am using the latest version, 28. I did a checked of my plugin and found that Shockwave Flash is at version 12.0.0.77. I use the Norton add-on because of the password vault, which keeps my passwords safer then if I was to use the remember passwords under security that Firefox offers because you need a password to use the vault. Also, I did actually disable the Norton add-on and found that I was still getting the non-responding issue along with the hassle of having to look up all my passwords. I was also told by the person who I paid to try to fix this issue that it had something to do with a Firefox firewall, but I did not know that Firefox had a firewall. If there is one, how would I disable it? Thank you again for answering, Ann

PS--I use the Norton add-on with IE and do not have the non-responding issue.

Yahoo is a big email system. It could possibly be the fact that the Firefox browser you're using cannot except the large intake of the website. You may want to update the browser, or to use another browser for checking your emails (Installing one) or installing Thunderbird and have the emails go there, which is much more responsive. I use Thunderbird myself, and it is much faster than going on the website, and much more responsive.

Diamond: Firefox 28 is the current version of Firefox so there isn't a way to update any further.

Krava: Can you try a reset of Firefox? The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.

  • Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

If that doesn't work, can you try to install Nightly and see if it occurs there? Nightly is a pre-alpha release of Firefox and used for testing.

Thunderbird is another viable solution to this if you want to access your e-mail without opening Firefox every time

Moses B. I already did the reset of Firefox, no help. By the way, this non-responding happen even when I am trying to respond on this forum. This is just not a Yahoo mail issue. In fact, the non-responding is so bad right now I am ending up with bunch of words running together and typos that I now have to go back and fix so you can read this. Seems like whenever the browser is in the non-responding mode I lose my input and get tons of errors. I’m going to type my response in the word-processer and paste it in. Should be much faster as I won’t be getting errors do to the browser not responding. Anyhow, the only extension I have is Norton, the rest are plugins like Flash. I will try to install Nightly but I’m not sure about using Thunderbird. Thunderbird looks like another email program where I would need another email address. I looked at Nightly, but I need to know which one I would download that would work with WIN8.1. I could not tell from looking at the information as there are three different windows that can be downloaded. Also, would I be able to use the Norton ID Vault with this test version? Thank you again for your help, Ann

Diamond, Thank you for your suggestion to use Thunderbird.

more options

Krava,

Thunderbird lets you bring over your own e-mail address and sets it up automatically.

As for which Nightly to download, it doesn't matter whether you choose the Express or Standard. Express is just a smaller file that downloads the setup file and Standard is the entire Firefox setup.

Norton ID addon would most likely be working but as Nightly is a pre-alpha, there's a chance it wouldn't be compatible. But you're not going to use Nightly for daily use. You're just going to see if the not responding still occurs.

Before you download Nightly, can you try to start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode? Safe Mode is a special diagnostic mode for troubleshooting. You can get to it by:

  • Holding SHIFT while double clicking the Firefox icon on your desktop
  • Running firefox.exe -safe-mode via the Run command (Windows key + R)

Hi Moses, I can try safe mode again, but I believe I tried it when the problem first started. Using Thunderbird might help with the email, but it won't help with the problems I have with the non-responding while filling out forms or just try to read something on a website and I have to scroll down or go to another page it keep on reading. Thanks again for all of your help and suggestions.

Hi Moses. I just tried using the safe mode but I was still getting the non-responding issue just not as bad. However, I had other issues with safe mode and could not test it out as much as I had wanted to. I am going to download Nightly now and I think I'll do the standard version.

Hi Moses. I have been using Nightly and, for the most part, the non-responding does not happen as often. Some site even seem faster when I go to them while using Nightly. I even did a "side-by-side" on one site that was, well really just a constant non-respond after every click. When I went to that site with Nightly, the site did respond much better, but I still received some errors. Not perfect, but better. I do have a problem with one site, Lumosity, which I use 4 to 6 times a week. I find that when I use Nightly the site jumps which causes errors to my responses during the training of my core cognitive functions. And, therefore lower scores due to the jumping. Is there some place where I can report the problem with the Lumosity site to the developers? Thank you again for all of your time and help.

To rule out Flash as a potential culprit, could you try one or both of the following:

(1) Disable the Protected Mode feature of the Flash Player plugin.

The following pages provide different ways to do that:

Flash needs to completely unload from memory (restarting Firefox might help) before this would take effect.

(2) Set Flash to Click-to-Play ("Ask to Activate").

This will delay Flash from starting on a page until you approve it, which will help distinguish Flash-generated issues from page load and layout issues.

To set "Ask to Activate", open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Look for "Shockwave Flash" and change "Always Activate" to "Ask to Activate".

When you visit a site that wants to use the Flash, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.

Any improvement in these scenarios?

more options

jscher2000, I have already tried different scenarios with the flash player, but the flash player does not seem to be the issue. To me Firefox just does not want to "play nicely" with WIN 8.1. Nightly does seem somewhat more stable on most, but not all of the sites, so maybe the next upgrade will be the answer. I sure hope so. Do you know how I report the one issue I am having with Nightly? Thank you for your help and suggestions.
