Can't post a gallery picture to Twitter

more options

I'm not able to post pictures from my Gallery to Twitter using the Twitter app. I click the photo button from the tweet composition screen, select "Gallery," select the photo I want and it switches to the Crop function and gets hung up. I can (sometimes) move the crop lines but after that nothing happens no matter what I click. Eventually it gives up and returns to the tweet composition pane.

I am able to take a new photo and tweet that, but I can't tweet a photo that is already in my Gallery. That's the problem.

Hi CB

Have you tried starting from the gallery? Tap the share icon on a picture in your gallery and select Twitter.

Thanks, Michelle

You can also try rebooting your device but the share method from the gallery as mentioned by Michelle should work as well.

I tried rebooting didn't make any difference. The only sharing options from the Gallery are Email, Wallpaper and Bluetooth. Twitter (or Facebook) is not an option. I'm using the ZTE Open, maybe that makes a difference. OS is OPEN_US_DEV_FFOS_V1.0.0B01. Can other people with this device tweet a photo from the Gallery?

Hi CB,

Thanks for your reply. I think you need to install the free Twitter app from the Marketplace. Then, you will get the option in the gallery. Let me know how it goes.

Yes, I'm using the Twitter app. I tried unistalling and reinstalling it. That did add Twitter to the share options in Gallery, but it still doesn't work. I just keep getting a blank new tweet screen, whether I try it from Twitter or from Gallery. I tried tweeting anyway, just in case there was just a problem with displaying the photo (sometimes happens in Janetter desktop), but the photo is definitely not attached to the tweet.

It's weird because if I start a new tweet, and choose to take a new photo for it, it works fine. The new photo shows up under the text box and gets tweeted as you would expect. It's just when I try to tweet a Gallery photo that nothing happens. Doesn't seem to matter if the photo was taken before the Twitter app was installed or after. It also doesn't seem to matter whether I enter text before or after trying to attach the photo.

I just tried again from Gallery and got an error message: "Problems loading the friends list." Maybe that's a clue? That's the only time I've gotten any error message.

Hi CB,

Ok, I can reproduce this on my device now, thanks for this report and additional details.

It does fail in the way you describe intermittently. I have three 1.0 devices and for all of them it will fail for some period of time and then all will start to succeed in attaching the pic to the tweet.

So, I do think after testing this for a while on multiple devices that it is most likely to be the network or a server-side problem. It goes very slowly through the screens (crop and the tweet screen) and it takes several seconds to add the picture when it does succeed.

I will keep an eye out for bugs and feedback related to this going forward and ask around to see if others have seen this also. SOrry I'm not more help right now.

Best regards, Michelle

I discovered another aspect of this issue. I learned how to do a screen cap on the ZTE Open and discovered that I can tweet a screen cap that is in the Gallery (from Twitter). I still can't tweet images taken with the camera in the Gallery, only screen captures. So maybe it has something to do with how camera pics are stored in the Gallery.

To sum up: I can tweet new pictures I take from within Twitter and screen caps from the Gallery, but not camera pics from the Gallery. Tweeting the wallpaper works too but who wants to do that? :D It will be interesting to see if I can tweet downloaded pics once I get the v1.1 update. I don't know if it's relevant but I have no SIM in my device; wifi only at this point.

I reinstalled again and the Twitter option disppeared from Gallery again. Twitter also crashes a lot, so obviously it's not too stable yet and all the parts aren't working together too well, but I'm sure it'll all get worked out!

If anyone else has this problem, I figured out a workaround. What you do is find the picture you want to tweet in the gallery, touch the screen to make the tools at the bottom disappear, do a screen cap (press On & Home simultaneously), and then tweet the screen cap from Twitter. There will be gray bars at the top and bottom but you can crop those out.

This also works for tweeting pictures you find online. Make it fill the screen, do a screen cap, and go from there.

I made some more experiments and discovered that if I move a screencap (png) to the camera folder (via USB), I can tweet it. I can also tweet a photo (jpg) if I use the Explorer app to pick it, rather than the Gallery. Unfortunately there are no thumbnails, just filenames numbered sequentially, so you have go by the sequence of photos you took to find the one you want. But if you're just tweeting the last photo it's simpler than the screen cap method.

I have a ZTE Open (only 256 MB of RAM). The Twiiter app crashes quite often, but almost *always* crashes when I try to send a tweet with a picture. If I start composing a tweet and then go to the gallery for a pic, it almost always crashes. When I start in the gallery and attempt to share via Twitter, it usually crashes but sometimes manages to post the tweet before crashing.

Bottom line: The Twitter app is not usable for posting tweets reliably on the ZTE Open. I only have the ZTE Open (and emulators) so I can't verify if it works on devices with more RAM. Who makes the app - is it Mozilla or Twitter? I'd pull it from the store if it's Twitter - make them fix it. And I'd also recommend tweaking the APIs so you can use the Twitter mobile site to send pics in the Firefox browser.

A little more info on crashes from attempting to tweet pictures: there's a bug in Bugzilla https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=886292 and I have posted a crash dump https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/864721df-baae-4e15-95a8-5920b2131115.

Those were done with the 1.2 B2G preview compiled from source. I may reset the ZTE back to the software it shipped with and try to capture another dump now that I have the procedure nailed down.
